I've been racking my brain for a couple days now, and I'm stumped... I was I was a little more fluent in linux

I'm trying to update some packages on a couple systems using yum. I tried 'yum install libxml2-devel' first and it returned with "Cannot find valid baseurl for repo: updates-released"

Did some searching and found a couple places that said it was likely a DNS issue. Sure enough, I corrected my DNS address, and after a couple tries, it worked. So I move on to the next package, 'yum install ncurses-devel'. It logs the same problem again "Cannot find valid baseurl for repo: updates-released".

Double checked DNS again, and I can ping out using hostnames.
I looked through /etc/yum.repos.d/ and all seems well (comparing the link against any other forum posts or docs I've found so far). But browsing to the link: http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/4/ gives an empty repository...

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/$releasever/$basearch/ is where fedora-updates.repo is actually looking.
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/ is empty though

Any thoughts?
Thanks, LF

One step closer... Had to change the baseurl to point to archives.fedoraproject.org

[updates-released] works, but [extras] has a problem.
It's looking for: http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/extras/4/i386/repodata/repomd.xml
But,
http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/extras/4/i386/repodata/
redirects to:
http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/extras/4/i386/repoview/index.html

So it gives a 404...

[edit:
Changed [extras] back to the non-archived repository, so it seems good.

Got the 404 for [base], changed it to the archives, and now it can't find repomd.xml for [base]

[edit2:
Changed [base] to point to the same baseurl as [updates-released] and it works...
Not sure I feel quite right about it working like that, but as long as it's working I'm happy.

FC4 is way past EOL. I believe FC8 is almost to EOL. Most repositories stop supporting packages for a release after it is EOL. You will probably need to find the source files or rpms and download them your self which means resolving the dependencies on your own. If you find a source for the older source files (they shoudl be available on the net) you could build your own repository and install from there.

Yea, the whole EOL bit didn't occur to me until late yesterday when I found the fedora archives repo. I would be very happy moving up to something a little more recent, but I'm afraid we get what we get on these boxes. When I get time on this project, I might try to put together our own internal repo of the FC4 based sources... Until then though, I'll get this one updated and just make an image that I can reuse on the other boxes.

When you say "resolving the dependencies on your own," what exactly do you mean? If I have essentially a copy of the FC4 repo, will yum not resolve dependencies lie it does now (as long as they're all present in that repo)?

On a side note, is it still abbreviated FC8 (or FC9, etc) now that they dropped the 'Core' and merged the Core and Extras into one repo?

Whe I said "resolving the dependencies on your own", I was thinking about upgrading indivdual packages and downoading each package (and it's dependancies). I then had the thought that you could download all the source files to a local machine, make your own repository and use a package manager to upgrade everything. I should probably have made that second thought another paragraph to indicate it was a separate train of thought.

As far as I know people are still referring to Fedora Core 8, 9, 10... as FC#. I've recently seen references to FC10.

I don't think 'extras' and 'core' have anything to do with the name Fedora Core. I believe they refer to levels of stablility in the packages they contain. Actually stability isn't the right word. I believe a 'core' repository contains only those packages necessary to successfully run Fedora Core on a machine and an 'extra' repository will contain extra packages such as lirc, mythtv, etc.
