I've posted this on the HP forum but thought I'd try here too. It's been driving me nuts for several days now. Seems that any cure I find on the HP site requires the Compaq operating system. But surely the's another way...

Presario 3000 Notebook Model 3017cl

Cannot install "other Devices" - Multimedia Audio Controller - Network Controller - PCI Modem - Video Controller.

Not perhaps as straight forward as it might seem... or should be.

Did a full format and complete install, after insidious "infections."

Used original disks, Operating System and Quick restore. BUT the Quick Restore crashes on the 3rd disk with an error message something to the effect that either a file is corrupted or cannot find 'image' I think it said. Did this no fewer than 3 times.

Anyway... I end up at good ol' C:\ So I used another but different version of XP with SP2 and that's what's running now.

There is no longer a partition on C: where I presume some of the original restore info was stored.

I don't particularly want to go through the Quick Restore again and end up with all that stuff I don't need nor want. Just want to reinstall "Other Devices." Can you help me out please. =)

With help on the HP forum pretty much cured this problem. As wiwth most things 'puter it's all a matter of knowing where to look and they sure don't make that as obvious as it could be.

Now if this thing will remain running for just a bit longer I just may order one of those new 27 inch iMacs. Like the look of those. =)

Glad you got that sorted NoJive. It's certainly a pain in the derry-air when that happens. I had a similar problem with Dell.

And the new edgeless, LED-backlit screen with 2,560x1,440-pixel native resolution is simply jaw-dropping for viewing high-definition video. Simply put: We've seen a ton of them, and no other current all-in-one offers a screen that looks this good. In fact, to get a similar resolution on any desktop-computer display, you?d have to step up to a 30-inch monitor, which would set you back $1,000 or more for the display alone.

I'm weighing up the pros and cons of a new system myself based either on 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or 2.60GHz Intel Quad Core. Not sure which to go for. I'm thinking perhaps of going with the Dual core but getting a MB that will let me upgrade to a quad core as and when.

My company uses almost nothing else but HP kit. I've become very familiar with their desktops, laptops, and printers, and have picked up a lot of tricks over the years. For instance, despite the hardware differences, I've got an XP image that works across several different laptops/desktops by dint of having all the required drivers in the image, and having been tweaked on each machine before updating the image.

The one thing that caused the most problems for me was getting different Intel chipsets and graphics drivers to co-exist, but every now and then, newer audio hardware gives me a headache, too.

I'm glad you got yourself sorted. Personally, I just start with a vanilla XP installation and download all the required driver packages for each model from HP's download section, then unpack them and integrate. I've never had a use for their support/forums, nor their restore media. The first thing to go when I'm preparing a new machine is the factory installation and the restore partition.

Having had some experience with a lot of different brands, I've come to view HP and their hardware positively, but I know that's not the case for everybody.

I can boast, at least, that it takes me about three-hundred seconds to swap out a broken panel on most HP laptops. I have not found a lot of other brands quite so easy...

I've pretty much decided the 27 inch iMac is coming home.

Way more money than I should spend but as my wife said: "You're dead a long time."

Other factors include.... how about a complete 'puter meltdown and purge.

I've been cobbling together outdated technology for the last 10 years and it all came to a screeching halt 4 or so months ago when the last box more or less went up in smoke.... you know that wonderful acrid aroma of something electrical making one last gasp....and pooof. No ones and zero's to make the world right.

That was it. A friend lent me this laptop and as soon it was up and running the purge began in ernest.

Borrowed another friends van, got it as close to the back of the house as possible and out the door went nearly all things computer. Monitor after monitor - towers towers and more towers and printers and cables...box upon box of CD burners. Kept some of the Sipps and Simms and a fairly new printer.

During the purge I ran across the receipt for the first computer I purchased.I'd been using 286's at work before that and go back to the even more arcane. This was considered a screamer!

I still had the scanman. The card for the thing is just a bit wider than this Presario.=)

Anyway that was the first and only pre built machine. Since then it's been beg borrow buy odds and sods build up tear down add frustration and repeat.

No more. Done. And the only way ensure no more building is to get rid of everything that encourages building and replace everything with something as uniniviting as an iMac. Swapping out ram is as far as I am prepared to wrench.

I very nearly purchased the 24" iMac but wasn't comfortable with the 'heat' issues and this new generation seems to have that under control... so what's left?

I just want to play with the damn thing. That simple. Like the look of it. Like the bells and whistles. Don't like the price but.... as she who must be obeyed says. "Why not.... you're dead a long time." =)

Wow! What a monster! Commander Keen would have played well on that.

That's pretty much the sort of spec for my first 'real' PC! =D

I like Mac design... I just loathe OS X. Of course, nowadays, you can run anything on them!

How so?

I'm looking at it purely from what I call a"User Stupid" perspective.
