Came upon this recently and was gobsmacked! I've got to attempt something like this in the near future. I'm not 100% but I think here in merrie Englande I will not get such a great view of the galaxy crossing the night sky, I'll have to check with Stellarium.

That's really cool. You almost can't see the seams in the glass domes... =D

I should think it would be possible to get some great piccies with the right camera, on a clear night, so long as you're a coupla' hundred miles from the nearest source of light (ie- cities).

When I was living out in the sticks of Ireland, I used to love looking up at the sky; miles from the nearest town, and many more from any cities, surrounded by mountains, on a clear night, you'd lose count of the stars between your fingers at arm's length. My night vision became so acute that I could see great swathes of colour across the night sky, and walk easily by starlight (even during New Moon) while visiting friends from the city (Dublin or London) would swear they were completely blind, stumbling into ditches because they were too proud to let me take their arm.

So, if you fail to find a good spot for something like that in England, perhaps a little trip along the Macgillycuddy Reeks would do... if you can ever find a clear night, that is. Bring waterproofs.
