Background info

The other night a bad storm was moving through our area. I shutdown the computers and unplugged everything from it. I mean everything. Monitors, keyboard, power cable, ethernet cable, etc...

Now

The next day I came home from work and was plugging everything up and went to fire up the computer. Nothing. Not one light, no sound, nothing. I disconnected all the connections to the power supply and jumped the PSU to see if it had power. It does. I hooked an external fan up to it and it came on no problem.

The flea light on the motherboard does come on and will stay on after I unplug the power cable for about about 5 minutes or so, then goes out.

I am sure that no power came into the house and fried anything since absolutely nothing was plugged up to it.

Could this just be coincidence? I shut down and unplugged everything so something like this wouldn't happen and it bit me in the ass.

Then I kept everything unplugged except the power switch and plugged up the power supply to the motherboard and tested the connection. The lights on the power switch did come on as well as the fan started up, but of course that is all since nothing else was plugged up.

Could this be the power supply or the power switch? I am betting on the power switch since the power supply seems to be fine as well as the motherboard.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

ok, weirder things have happen - our big cluster tends to eat ram modules when it's rebooted, otherwise they were running fine for years...

since the fans spin up, the motherboard (via which the power signal is transmitted) gives the go command to the power supply, which at least delivers power on one of it's lanes.

What happens if you plug in just the graphics card and a monitor?

I haven't tried that Tyberius Prime. I'll give that a go and see what happens. I'm a bit nervous about jumping the power supply when it's plugged into the motherboard. I did it once but...

newbielike : there's no power switch on the power supply and for testing parts I had it plugged straight into the wall.

I went ahead and ordered a power switch for it to see if that does the trick. This will be the LAST time I buy a PC that is Dell ( or any other manufacturer) for personal use. I ordered the part, the ship the wrong one. I ship that back and order the right one. They, for some reason cancelled that order. I call and order the switch AGAIN! Supposed to be her in a couple of days.

I might just wait until the switch comes and test that. If that fails, I'll re-evaluate.

Thanks for the infos
