Was reading about some weird stuff. You know, fringe science things. Suddenly the urge to do book things struck me.

Making recycled paper looks easy. Have yet to make a deckle, but shouldn't be too hard. Then still have yet to make some paper. Looks easy. Not too worried.

Then started looking into binding. One of the easiest is Japanese stab binding. Made a few Jap stabbers and Girlie #2 loves them. Quick, easy, and not hard to find.

But it was old world, Western, or traditional binding that I was having a hard time finding out about. Plenty about sewing the signatures, but not much beyond that at all. Finally found an awesome series of vids by Baronessnz.

Time extensive, letting glue dry and things, so no telling when I'll be able to show anything of substance.

Any of you artsy folks wanna beat me to the punch?

I prefer Coptic binding.

No adhesive, everything lays nice and flat, lovely.

Went with coptic thanks to Reisio.
Water colours on paper.
Glued to super thick card stock.
Ten signatures sewn in.

Still have to finish the spine.

Rock on.

I guess the only real difference is how the signatures are stitched together. Still something about this way that I prefer.

The coptic stitching seems to make more sense to me. It's easier for me to see it in my head.

Okay, the one in the photo. I did some black watercolour in the same manner and glued on a spine. No pic for that.

Mistakes!

One of the bigger mistakes that I made was not hard creasing the signatures. I did them real lazy by hand. So the spine wants to sit bigger when it's o' natural. Following that mistake, I squeezed the spine just a tad to try to compensate for the slightly bigger spine. Whoa! Not good. Now the signatures are not lined up at all. Not even close. Squishing the spine made them wiggle. Lessons learned.

Earlier today I did a really quick soft cover coptic. I hard creased the signatures and the spine turned out pretty damn well. I have some paper that is a bit thicker than business cards and I used some of it for a spine cover. Very well indeed.

Real hobby shop a few towns over. Field trip tomorrow to pick up some real card stock and things.

Yeah I need to find the perfect paper, that has been and will continue to be always available.

Got a big thing of card stock. Also got some chip board (took forever to find because I didn't know what it was called). Also got some cheap water colour pencils. If you ever get water colour pencils, spend the money because these cheap ones suck big time.

Card stock with water colour pencils. Used my finger instead of a brush to apply water. Wrapped that to chip board for covers. Then glued on some card stock to protect the spine.

Next one I might put in some inside cover thingies. Inside cover sheets or whatever they are called.
