Well you don't need an SSD to be as big as an HDD ... you should use them in combination. HDD for all the large, static stuff like photos, music, other media and SSD for OS, applications, caches, scratch disks, paging files etc. I have a 256gb SSD for OS, apps and games. One 128gb SSD, 2 x 1TB HDDs, 2 x 3TB HDDs. When I sense that one of the disks is becoming unreliable (long before it actually breaks) I buy another one and copy all my stuff the the new drive. Usually by that time the new drives are at least 3 times bigger and a bit cheaper. So I had 2 x 300GB drives ... replaced those with 2 x 1TB drives and now 2 x 3TB drives. Each time I've had to pay less for the new pair. All my old stuff can easily fit on the new drives and I can even keep my hundreds of gigabytes of photos on two separate drives in case something happens to one of them. All this is of course most conveniently achieved with the help of a 'real' PC ;) Call me old fashioned but I still enjoy the comforting whirr of a giant black box sitting on top of the desk.
