I have a large design, and well maybe this is where I go wrong, the large design is 4656x810 pixels at 72DPI. When I reduce the image down to 600x104 pixels (same resolution) which is a size suitable for the web, well the graphic doesn't really look good at all.
So, realizing maybe I started off wrong, what are my options for correcting this? My reduced graphics look like crap!

Thanks for any advice.

Karl..

Hello kstubs and welcome.
Can you show us an example of the design you are talking about? It would help.
Also, "my reduced graphics look like crap" is relative. What is wrong about them and where are you hoping to show a "better version?

A picture is worth a shedload of words.

Doesn't look like there's anything wrong with it.
But ... if you want to preserve more of the shadows and highlights you should probably make them bigger before reducing the size of the image.
There's no algorithm that would help you display detail that is less than a pixel wide.

Righto.
Before we proceed any further, what is the intended function? I'm presuming just web based. Does this include a need for transparency? Do you need just the one size? Is each layer in the PSD going to be a separate graphic?
Also it looks set for animation.
What format do you what the finished graphic to be?

Arthurio, yes I was thinking just this, that I need to accentuate my shadows and highlights.
Tao, transparency not necessary, it should sit on a nice white background, or if not a white backround, I would regenerate for another mat.
For now I just need the 1 size, appx. 48x48 that sits in the corner of my website, but thinking I need even a smaller one, like 24x24 (future use) and can see that any highlights at this size would completely be lost.
Yep, setup for animation which I am doing with Javascript, so Gray is Idle, Green is Live, and flashing colors is Working or Active.
I need a final graphic suitable for web and preserving quality as much as possible so that it looks like a fancy 2.0 web graphic!

Here's a snap shot of the graphic in use:

Thanks for any help.

Arthurio has hit the nail on the head there Karl.
It would be interesting to see your finished work after starting over again.
