Well, no.... still bucking for that paper saying I piled things higher and deeper - it's getting close now though.
But then, I'm getting paid as if I had it, so what's the damage.

Have aquired wife and house - spent basically every free minute the last 6 months fixing that place up - together with work
pretty much the busiest time of my life so far.

Good luck doing the house up is it an old build that you are repairing or a relatively new one that you are custom fitting? Whatever way, well done.

it's about thirty years old - most of the work has been 'adjusting' it for grandma ( ground floor access, shower that's big enough for somebody to assist eventually), but there's some energy conservation stuff that I'll need to do 'soon'.

AH, TP's fixing up a house! I got the wife thing down years ago, but still haven't managed to acquire a house. Haven't really been certain enough of where I'm going to be to put down roots. That time may be coming soon, though. We'll see.

I am actively looking into getting a narrow boat to live on, either in Ireland or Merrie Englande. Probably happen when I retire in four years time but I'd rather do it sooner. The price of property is far too high for my pocket so this my be my best alternative.

@TP We did a bathroom rebuild just about a year ago. We knew it was going to be an UGLY fix and it was. Our objective sounds similar.Future Proof if you will. Extra-wide door for wheel-chair access, if ever needed. Level entry shower. Single seat soaker tub. Fancy schmancy Toto washlette toilet. (You really want to invest in one of those believe me! ) Heated floor and the only thing nicer than a heated floor is a heated toilet seat!

Now we're installing thermal pane windows & that too is turning into a bit of a night mare. Lots of rot to deal with. There's more going on too but that's another story. And the result of a recent wind storm we have a micro logging operation underway in the backyard.

We just bought (I mean the bank bought and we are in debt for decades) a small 4-room, 100 sq m (~1000sq ft?) detached house in Tartu, Estonia last autumn. The walls are made of 2 concrete panels with 18cm of wool sandwiched in between. Should be pretty durable we hope. The windows are triple pane. Heated floors in all rooms powered by a gas boiler. Heating bills have been several times lower than in a bit smaller apartment where we used to live before. Overall pretty happy with the choice so far.

@Arthurio: Yes that sounds like a very nice energy efficient construction.
Is there a moisture barrier in those walls though? I guess there has to be, all the 'wool' materials (glas, stone, sheep) really really stop working as a heat barrier if they ever get wet .

On our second house now, outside of town this time. On a private that went dry in the drought ~3 years ago. We've spent since then installing large water tanks, gutters, various pumps, and other necessities to convert over to a full-time rain collection system. The aquifer has since come back so that our well is in water again, but the rain water is much nicer, so we still use it primarily, the well is more of a backup now.

Good to see you too, Tao (and everyone else!). I know exactly the kind of boat you're talking about--put it on a river somewhere and call it home? Sounds like a pretty neat idea.

@TP: Yes and there are a few small holes in the outer concrete panels so any moisture has a way out and to provide some ventilation. Ventilation is key to dealing with moisture. We have some pretty cold winters around here so houses are built to be pretty airtight to keep the cold air out. When people renovate older buildings they usually lose any natural ventilation they used to have so mold sets in eventually if they forgot to think about ventilation. Our house is brand new though so we have forced and heated ventilation with energy recovery for that. The heated part is mostly there to prevent frost on the ducts and it's electric so we keep it at the minimal setting.

Hello everyone. Have not been here in a while and just thought I would pop on by. Glad to see some familiar names still visit occasionally.

I have been just hanging out with family lately, doing a lot of writing trying to finish up a book I have been working on for years, and focusing on the spiritual side of life. Was traveling extensively with my job, so I cashed in my stock and left. It is sort of like a mid-life temporary retirement. I am loving it - definitely recommend it to anyone if they ever get the chance.
