For internet security, use a firewall like this.
For file level security, use the NTFS file system.

I should add that if you want to have a really well protected system, linux based OS are generally better than windows. But it isn't worth changing the OS if you don't really need a "super +" protection.

Do possible intruders have physical access to the box? If so then they want to use some sort of enrypted file system (there is virtually no security on any OS/machine that can be accessed physically)

Otherwise a well configured firewall should do trick against Internet attacks
And some sort of secure shared filesystem (Linux or Windows) should do for file sharing security

For some real good protection from the internet, just get a cheap box, install linux (for internet access) and connect the PC to it...very nice.

Just add the above protections...

Just unplug it from the jack. Problem solved.

Precisely Watson! ^ Now.... comfortable that accurate corrections will follow... my silly little brain is thinking that perhaps overhall encryption of sensitive files is worth considering. PGP as I understand, baffles even gov't cpu's. Should you however be a good, true and, upstanding citizen (from..where was it??) you should have no problem in allowing 'your government;' access to your Hard Drive. So please do not encrypt anything. Please trust us. We as your government will never use gathered information against you. WE, your government, just need to know who you know and talk to and, how all that correlates to what WE", your Government, has gathered via satellite up/down links and keyword encrypted images that may or may not coincide with a probabilties alogorythm Omar the great forumlated 3 weeks ago last wednesday when the tail lights on his 53 Chevy were... like almost crimson. You 'member that color.

Edit Forgot this.... I agree with it... you may not... and hey that's ok. Benjamin Franklin I do beleive said this. (or close to it)

"Those who would sacrifice liberty for security.... deserve neither."
