I have partition magic6. C: drive is a 4gig divided into C: & E: @ approx 2gig each. D: drive is a 40gig.

I want the 40gig to become C: I would then like to partition the 40gig with at least one 5 gig scratch disk.

The 4 gig would then become whatever follows.

Now I know I'm going to have to change jumper settings on the 40 gig from Slave to Master and the four gig to slave...and change some bios settings but in what order should all this be done?
Somewhere along the line I have to install the OS on the 40gig... but when? I'll be running win98se.

Clear as mud right? Sorry 'bout that but I don't know how else to explain it.
Thnx for what comes back. =)

1. Make sure you have the Windows boot floppies. I'm not sure about Win 98, but on Win 2k, there's a directory on the CD called BOOTDISK with a utility for creating those floppies.

2. Make sure you have a backup of everything on those HDs you want to keep.

3. Turn off the computer, change the jumpers on the HDs as appropriate and install them as necessary.

4. Turn the computer back on and enter the BIOS. If it's a more recent BIOS, there will probaby be some kind of auto-detect setting for detecting the HDs.

5. Once the HDs are detected properly, stick in boot floppy #1 and reboot the computer. Windows Setup will step you through the process of partitioning your drives and installing Windows.

Of course, this is the only way I remember it working (concerning the boot floppies) since I've been installing nothing but Win 2k for the last 5 or 6 years.

Good luck!

Thanx Wes... I'm a bit nervous 'bout this whole thing as I don't have a cd burner and backing up *all* data is pretty much out... I've got all the programs so I'm thinking I'll move/delete data from the 40gig.. over to c/e and hope partition magic...really is! <lol>

If you have a bootable cd-romdrive you could also use the win98 cdrom to boot and install.
Make sure you have backuped everything...and do it again.
Since you want to backup data to the 5 gig hd follow these steps:

0) In win98 goto Start>>Control-panel>>software>>click make-disk tab. You end with an windows startdisk.

1)
a) Computer off
b) make the 4 gig slave (let's call this david)
c) make 40(goliath) master

2)
a) Start computer and boot from cd or disk.
b) DO NOT Install win98 yet.
c) You now end up with the dos prompt c:>_
d) Navigate to the partitions on david. Since the master is now goliath the drive letters are changed! but should be this: c:=goliath (former d d:=david (former d e:=david (former e
e) now do 'format d:' and 'format e:' this will remove ALL data from both drives.
f) with Xcopy you can move al your data from c: to d: and e:
g) now do format c: and thus cleaning all files from the disk (do not do this when there is still data left)

3)
a) put computer off and remove david or deconnect it's connectors. (thus making sure nothing can happen)
b) put comp on and boot from disk/cd and install win98
c) install partition magic
d) now partiton goliath the way you want.
e) computer off and put david back

4)
a) now move all data back to goliath.
b) partition david the way you want.
c) reboot and you are finished.
5) With letter assinger you can change drive letters after partitining the disks.

Good luck.
