Hi all,

Do any of you guys use Laptop or Notebook computers? I am looking into getting a mid-priced laptop ($1000-1200) that I can use to do web design, regular office stuff, and use some music sampling / synth programs like Buzz.

Any suggestions?

Thanks mucho

Eric

i find Laptops difficult to do webdesign work (esp hard coding) ... and graphics if you have no external mouse (make sure you get one)...

I have been doing graphics, web design and animation amongst a million other things on laptos for the last five years... with no problems... and a touchpad is just as good as any mouse.. you just have to get used to it...

I use Dell Inspiron 8200 /1gig ram / 2.6 Pentium 4 bla bla bla.

I have both but I favor my desktop when I'm at home. I have large hands so I like the spaced out keys and the 19" monitor.

I wouldn't want to spend all my time on this little laptop screen.

in my opinion laptops are for portability and desktops are far more suitable for a day's work. If I was going to go with a laptop only, I would get a docking station for the home, or wherever it is that you'll use it the most. Lot's of people work on them exclusively though

As for a latop in that price range, it seems low but of course it depends on what you're going to do with it, you said web design, that could be notepad, or Photoshop and Flash you know? I assume since you'er talking about music editing it'd be more along the lines of PS/Flash caliber apps, for this you'd want bunches of RAM and a top of the line processor, couple that with a display that's of bearble size and you'll most likely be going over that price.

All I really have to say when someone wants a budget compter is: stay away from Compaq and HP =)

For the price range you mentioned I would recommend an iBook. I just sold mine in Dec.(I love my PowerBook now!) and I was very happy with it. I built lots of sites with it, coded PHP/MySQL projects, even used it for my Visual Basic coding (thanks to Virtual PC.). iBooks are just around 5lbs, very compact, and distinctive. Mine got compliments every where I took it.

yeah, i was thinking what norm was. the iBooks are pretty cheap, light, and apple makes good stuff. i rarely see good deals on them on eBay tho, but its worth a shot to look for. for design and music stuff a mac is your best bet imo.

iBook 800- $999.00

iBook 900- $1299.00

well worth the price.

i have a Seanix laptop that i got for pretty cheap, and it's been so handy.. i've done a lot of web work on it.. works fine, but the touchpad sucks so i have a mouse...

the laptop is pretty bulky and loud (fan) and heats up easily... so i want to get a powerbook as soon as I can afford it.. probably a 12" with a dvd burner so I can take it with me to edit video on the road. the powerbook would be out of your price range, but my seanix was right in there, and for the work you mentioned, it works great. i can't really reccomend a seanix though

I am seriously considering getting a laptop to replace my desktop but definitely gettting a docking station so I can still use my 19" monitor and full size keyboard.

I've got my eye on the Dell Inspiron 8500.

Xpirex, it sounds like you are pretty happy with the 8200. Any opinions on the 8500?

Petskull:

I'm curious. What's up with your edit of my last post in this thread? Was it offensive? Was it inappropriate?

I must know.... why are you censoring my carefully chosen words?
