A friend has a Lexmark x75. It prints ok, but won`t scan or copy. He`s checked the driver, reinstalled the software, checked the cable, and Lexmark tech support tells him that it won`t work with WIN2KPro (because of the NT Technology) , but it will work in WIN 2000. :/
When he opens it, the message tells him to check the usb cable, unplug the unit, and plug it back in. He does this. opens it again, same message..

Any ideas ? Anyone had this problem ?

Huh? I think he needs to call Lexmark back and say "WTF?" Win 2k and Win 2kP both run off NT don't they?

Stupid tech support.

Long shot, but has he checked that the printer port is set to USB ? He can find it in Printer properties.

I also have an x75 PrinTrio - it scans and prints ok, but the copy function seems kind of screwy... I just haven't messed with it too much...
I am also running Win2kPro -
If you find an answer, let me know!

I've tried reinstalling it a couple of times... I'm seriously thinking about wiping my system C:\ and starting over...

krets : Yea, that`s what I said.

axleclarkeuk : I`ll ask, but don`t the printer and scanner use the same cable ? (the printer works)

Ini : Thanks for the heads up. I knew I was forgetting something.

bodhi : I`ll let ya know if I learn anything .

I had exactly the same problem. It's not the USB or power cable or anything else. Something you installed is conflicting with the scanner driver. Even though it's a combo printer and scanner and share the same USB cable, the two components use different drivers. So you have to completely remove all trace of the Lexmark X-75 from your computer. Using the regular Lexmark uninstall does not clean it off your computer properly so there is a specially written "Lex Clean" utility freely available from the Lexmark site:
http://drivers.lexmark.com/drivers.nsf/0/56ECB026B68BBE9785256C5D0056DB19?OpenDocument&Lexmark+X73 Go get it and apply it.

After you run that you must go into safe mode as administrator to actually remove a folder from the registry too.
Ok here it is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\SYSTEM\CLASS\IMAGE <---(...you must delete the image folder completely.)

Then reboot and re-install the complete software and I can bet your socks that it will work fine.

If you install something like another printer or other USB device after ther Lexmark was installed it can have the effect of knocking out the Lexmark Scanner hardware drivers and the only way to repair it is the way I described. How do I know this? Well I have three X-75 printer/scanners and I spent a couple of hours with the Lex tech supervisor resolving this problem.

Peace...

Thanks for all the attention Ini. (just can`t let a problem go, eh? )
Netscape doesn`t like it much either .

And thanks, Xpirex. I`ll let him know how you fixed yours, but I doubt I`ll talk him into the registry. He`s not excedingly computer literate. Back ups and a clean install would do it too, yes ?

Hi Docilebob,
well all the possible uninstalls and re-installs won't work unless you delete the folder I mentioned. Lexmark gave me this information as the 'final solution' and they are aware that it is the ONLY workaround. Aside from reformatting his\her hard-drive, if your friend wants to re-use his scanner again he\she will have to go into the scary registry area and remove that IMAGE folder.
Is your frind in the UK?... if so I have the Lexmark Tech number so they can call and get guided through the whole process....

Thanks.
I`ll convince him to find somebody that knows what they`re doing.

No, he`s in the states and the tech people here told him that it would work in WIN2K Pro, but not the home version. I aslo advised him to try Lexmark again and hope the janitor didn`t answer the phone this time.

vandameer: Go to Start > Run > "regedit" > OK

Then, on the left-hand side, navigate to the "IMAGE" folder, right-click it and select "Delete."

Be sure not to delete/modify anything else you come across in the registry editor, though, as that might well have fatal consequences for your Windows installation if you're not sure what you're doing...
