I just reconfigured my outward-facing server/firewall and now I'm in a tizz. I added a lot of spam filtering and tightened up my firewall, but now I'm not recieving e-mails for a while, and I don't know if I've screwed op, or I'm just a lot less popular than I thought I was

Please, would you (a few of you from different places) write me a mail to see if it arrives. Post a reply here so I know you did it, and I'll reply to your e-mail if I recieve it ... I Know it sounds supid, but just can't work out how to test it any other way without skewing the results of the test by asking known people .. . i.e. those with trusted accounts/servers ... or mailing people who have no way of confirming that they either recieved my mail, or replied to it ...

Thanks for helping me on this one. Three or four would prove the case one way or the other.

Here's an abstract from a note I wrote in reply to Sib this morning .. it about sums up my state ...

quote:
It's a funny thing isn't it, how spam has become such a factor in the background of our everyday lives that we actually miss it when it's gone!! ... heh heh ...

I'd reinstalled a new version of Linux plus an upgrade to my mail server to provide improved mail and spam/virus filtering service. I guess I must have been on aouto-pilot every morning as I sorted through mailer-daemon rejection messages, system messages, logger and cron messages, etc. from my old linux boxes. Then, a day ago, it all went eerily quiet !!! New Linux - no errors or conflicts to report, syslogs tuned to only report exceptions, bounce mail sent to a catchall "silent" account on the server, and .... yes ..... no spam.

It was like moving from an apartment in Times Square to the depths of Saskachewan ... eerily silent ... then I started to thnk ... then I started to fret ... then I ... ARRRGHHHH .. I'm alone in the world !! Where is all my e-mail !!

Wierd but true ... Spam withdrawal!!!!

Thanks for helping with my rehab.

P.S. Just now, I also (OK - so now I really sound stupid) remembered that I'd created a jampot ... a place for the annoying little pests to go ... and with all the work of setting up and reconfiguring, I'd forgot to look there. Yeppers ... you guessed it .... all my spam was there all the time, sitting in spamtrap@..... just like it was supposed to be. So now I have the best of both worlds ... a spam free life ... and the hidden relief of a quick peek at the ugly ltlle buggers if ever I feel lonely again ...

Peace and love ....
