I'll second PHPBB. Just installed it this week and love it. Excellent features. |

I personally like Invision board...although I can be a bastard to set up on a new server (ie: transfering an existing board between servers). |

Vbulletin gives me a lot of simple customization via the admin cp itself, like even making my own bb code tags. But the fact you have to pay for stuff makes it lose quality imo. Invision is nice, but skinning it (other thn just changing the header and the stylesheet) is a total mess. |

Depends the population and the modifications it was done to the script. A good example is http://ot.d2mods.com/ it takes like 3/6 seconds more than this one for example: http://www.cgtalk.com |

phpBB2 isn't slower than vBulletin! Both forums that you posted as examples above opened in less than a second for me (plus according to that small statistic on the forum that's running phpBB2 main forum page was generated in about 0.6 seconds). Now, why that phpBB2 powered forum appears slower to you may be related to the fact that it's located in Europe, while the other one that's running vBulletin is located in the USA. The power of server also plays a very big role in speed of applications that run on it (for example, by fine tuning web server, sql database and installing a PHP accelerator you can achieve higher speeds). Also, some of those phpBB2 "modifications" aren't optimized very well and that's not phpBB's fault. And last but not least, phpBB2 comes with caching system which isn't enabled by default, and since most people don't read documentation, it's left forgotten... |

I've heard of WoltLab Burning Board a long time ago. In fact, I even had one test install of one old version that hasn't even been translated to english (ich kann Deutsch sprechen). Bugs that were present in those early versions and the fact that there's no official english version kept me away from Burning Board. |
