Topic awaiting preservation: how to uninstall norton anti-virus

coz last time i installed it slowed down my computer and tried to uninstall it but i couldnt, i dunno y...dismayed, i started the operating system all over again to get rid of it...

Now, with these new viruses coming out, i'd like to re-install it back but i want to know how to uninstall it first. So, whenever i want to get rid of it i can. Anybody, help?

Well first of all make sure you install via 'add/remove programs.' The most recent norton products 'seem' a lot friendlier than earlier versions that destroyed more than a few of my set ups.

Now if you really want to get anal about it, make back ups of your registry and all system files.
Then do your install. Then go back and make another back up of the registry and system files.
You now have 'before & after' backups.

Now go to zdnet. com or similar and somewhere in the utilities area you'll find a nifty little program called something like 'Compare'... or 'file compare..' when you get the program run your 'before & after' files. You should see where norton put all its stuff. Take note of the changes...back them up... print them... whatever... then when you're convinced norton is chewing up your system it's simply the tedious matter of removing those files ... and in theory =)you're pretty much back to square one.

I had a similar problem with Norton products on my Mac... But I found that Norton did a few things that you can disable in order to make it cooperate. There is an option in some Norton utility, may or may not be AV, I forget... but it basically makes it so that AV will check every file that gets moved to another location, downloaded, whatever... This happens to be a speed draining process, not surprisingly.. Disable whatever option this is to get your performance back... Norton Personal Firewall did this to me too, Most of Nortons programs are pretty interconnected... Check any and all of them for such preferences that make Norton check stuff repetetively.
