Topic awaiting preservation: Homework...Help!

I know that this seems a little disrespectfull and demeaning to ask for help on the Asylum, but I'm seriously out of luck here, seeing as it's 2 in the morning and I'm writing essays, but, does anyone know another word that could be used in place of "and/or." I know it's not crucial to my writing, but it really sounds bad in contrast with it's surroundings.

I'd really have to see the entire sentence to help with that one.

(And while we're on the topic of grammar, the possessive "its" does not have an apostrophe. It's like "hers" or "theirs." "It's" always means "it is" or "it has.")

Perhaps if you posted the snippet of text that you are referring to, it might help us to find you alternatives.

Here we go. Keep in mind, please, that I have a really hard time posting this, partly because I'm shy, so if your going to bash it, please don't bash it too bad. As of now, it's unedited.

Anyways, we read an article in AP US History about how 70-some percent of the population, in a poll, thought of history as dead, and this essay, in responce to that article, is supposed to both adress that issue while answering the question "Why study history?"without using the obvious answer "to learn from our mistakes. This is my opening paragraph, and the bolded text is the and/or.

Other than that, could you tell me if it seems good enough.

"Many people see history not as a living, breathing being full of life, energy and impact but as a long forgotten pond, still and seemingly lifeless. They fail to see that history?s ivy has writhed it's way into the cracks of the walls of history (and therefor, modern society), affecting our traditions, society and mannerisms. To them, history is bloodless; void of life. To the opposing group, however, history's impact is as blatant as the different between life and death, for they can see from where traditions are rooted, when societies were still fetal and and when and how current mannerisms evolved and/or were adopted. These are the people that not only have a vast understanding of history, but can divine from that both why our current societies operate in the manner that they do do and how future societies will act and operate."

In retrospect, I'd probably suggest "and how current mannerisms evolved." (Note the full stop)
Seems to say it all.
