Topic awaiting preservation: faulting application error?

Maybe someone here has had this problem before and maybe you know a fix. Maybe not, since there's absolutely nothing in the MS knowledge base about it... Can't find it on the HP site either.

I do have a call in to my IT department, but they are notoriously slow...

Here's the situation:
I have a Dell OptiPlex PC, less than 3 months old, set up on a Novell network. I have a printer, on my desk, an HP LaserJet 6p, which happens to be a network printer, and not locally connected. I am running Windows and Office XP, which may be where my problem lies!
Anyway, when I am in Word or Excel, and give a print command, the application shuts down. I'm getting a faulting application error for 2 .dll files: hpcrd02.dll and msvcrt.dll.
I don't appear to have any trouble printing to this printer from my other applications. Just in Office. It seems like its a communication error from the PC to the network.

I swear, I never have easy problems to fix... just these weird complicated ones. They always result in IT having to wipe my hard drive and rebuild the system. I'd really like to avoid that this time, if it's at all possible.
It's a corker, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be really glad to hear them.

The hpcrd02.dll file obviously goes to your HP LaserJet and the msvcrt.dll is the C++ runtime library. In saying that, it seems as if those files may be corrupted. Unfortunatley you may have to have your IT department uninstall and re-install the drivers for the HP LaserJet and MS Office.

Do you have the Service Pack installed? Sometimes that helps with program crashes but this sounds like the files are corrupt.

If you know the IP address of the network printer you can ping it to make sure the communication is good. If your computer is talking to the printer then I would do the ol' uninstall/reinstall game.

Hey C:\! Long time no hear from!

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printers several times... It seems to fix it enough to generate one document, but as soon as I go in to do another one, it crashes again... *sigh*

Sounds like I may need to have the whole mess wiped and redone. Again. Thanks for the comment though!

hmmm....so you have uninstalled and reinstalled...hmmmm.........

can you make it crash and then copy what the message box says and post it?
Just make it crash, click on the window and do Ctrl + C and then Ctrl + V here.

that may give me some more info. I've had problems with MS Office many times. It could have been that
nasty virus your freaking computers had there

Bodhi, you said you reinstalled the printer, but have you tried reinstalling Office? That might help fix the problem. Also, if possible, try replacing those files from a different (or have the IT department do it).

Wiping the drive is usually a last ditch effort when you have no idea what's wrong.
