hey guys, this has always been a stumper for me. I've been looking into shopping cart software and I've run into one that I think will work. found her: http://www.phpshop.org/ . To download it, it takes you to sourceforge for download, and the downloads are in tar.gz format. (file name: phpshop_0_6_1_b.tar.gz). Part of the instructions say this:

quote:
Uncompress the phpshop distribution anywhere outside your web tree.

how do you uncompress a tar.gz file on a remote server?(one being provided by a webhost). Or do you uncompress it on your local machine and than upload the files? If thats the case, how do you know what files to chmod and to what chmod commands? Or does this software assume that you are not using a webhost provider and that your running your shopping cart on your own local server? *sigh* and to think, I was finally catching on.

any clues?

Try "tar -xvzf phpshop_0_6_1_b.tar.gz"

I don't take responsibility for any mishaps.

jive: I tend to uncompress them on my local machine and then upload them. You will usually have to edit some files to drop in MySQL info, etc. so you might as well have a version on your local machine to nose through too

I believe WinZip and UltimateZip will both uncompress these formats they will do it in 2 stages so the first stage results in phpshop_0_6_1_b.tar and then you'll need to unzip that.

yep, or you can untar it with winzip or stuffit or the like locally and upload it all that way. As far as setting permissions, I'm not sure I understand the concern, it'd be the same whether you untar on the server or locally and upload. Just read the readme/install file.

yeah it's done. I just unzipped the file locally and than uploaded them. Found installation instructions in the site forums for permissions. Thanks for your help guys. Has anybody actually used php shop before?

next is a to find a good search engine to install for this guy. Emp, you mentioned phpdig in the faq. I might bug you for installation help. Reading the docs, it seemed a little confusing. Are you still using it for the GN?

jive: Yep it still seems the best option - it installs easily but feel free to hassle me about it if you like.

Most people I know who have used one of the options in the FAQ went with osCommerce so I'd be interested to hear your experience of phpShop.
