Okay, I've downloaded the trial version and got it working and I'm pretty happy with the results, however the $200 price tag really hurts.

Does anybody know of a lower cost alternative?

silence: it would depend on the scripts you have available, etc. Check out:

:FAQ: Can you recommend a free forum or message/bulletin board script?

~kicks himself for not checking the FAQ first~

Thanks, Emps.

I'm checking out InvisionBoard right now. Does anybody have any experience with this?

BTW, I have php, cgi/perl, and SQL support but I'd rather go php or perl/cgi since SQL queries cost me.

Yep...I've used invision board in the past. Like phpBB it can be a bitch to skin. Style elements all have pseudonyms, and I'll be stuffed if I can figure out what half of them are. Strangely you edit the style sheets and apply them globally on the board...and nothing happens. Not a single change is made. Then you go to delete the old ones, and it tells you it can't becuase they're in use, despite the fact that there's only 1 user account, your one, and you're not using it.

I prefer phpBB2 over Invision Board, especially since IB is not free anymore, while phpBB2 is open source...

Skaarjj, well everyone can download IB sources, but have you actually read their new license and examined their price structure? The term "Unlimited Free Trial" doesn't sound too appealing to me and not to mention that you don't have the same treatment as registered users...

Well, I decided to try the InvisionPB and it's kinda nifty. I'm taking a hit with the SQL queries but I get about 5mil with my hosting plan so we'll see. If the numbers start climbing, I might have to switch to a php/perl only solution.

Also, since the site is for a College Organization I'm pretty sure I can swing something with the licensing, but I have no problems with leaving the Invision copyright notices and whatnot on the pages.

But, we'll see.
