I've been MIA the last few days. Windows had slowed to a crawl (a very finicky and buggy crawl) since I hadn't reformated in about 2 years. I had 20 gigs of files I wanted to hold on to but no place to put them untill a pal of mine cleared up some space on one of his HDs for me. Instead of putting up with that crap again I've decided to give redhat 9 linux a try. I've got no reason not too anymore. I don't play PC games to much anymore except for my beleoved roguelikes which are available on linus. Firebird took the place of IE as my default browser and Thunderbird did likewise to OE. I've been using Open Office as of late as well. Only thing I'm gonna miss is Photoshop but I have a roomate with it on his mac.

So far so good! Only pain has been setting up the internet and my ISP, bellsouth, is to blame for that, not linux. Are there any linux wizzes here I can come crawling to for help if I need too

Life without PS? Impossible.

Good luck... One thing though. Something I heard:

Congrats on your move to Linux Schitzoboy. I've had it installed on an old box to play with for a bit, but never seem to get the time to mess with it enough to try and make it my main OS.

I just recieved and email yesterday from RH that said:

quote:
Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and errata support for
Red Hat Linux 9 as of April 30, 2004. Red Hat does not plan to release
another product in the Red Hat Linux line.

So it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to be sure you keep it updated from their site as much as possible till then.

yeah... I read this with my mouth hanging open...

you internet issues may be your modem's fault... WinModems suffer from poor linux support (guess why)...

..... and I'm still working on installing Photoshop on Mandrake Linux without buying CrossOver Office.... If I get it (I doubt it) I'll drop a line here...

Congrats on the switch to Linux I've been using Linux for everything except gaming for almost 2 years now and I love it. Warcraft 3 and Diablo2 are the two only reason I still have windows installed. Managed to get both of the games working on Linux some time ago, but they were too slow to play

Sad to hear about the Red Hat thing. As has been said, it is the end of an era. But luckily there are other great Linux distros available.

I can't quite remember where I've heard it but I *think* it was something about RedHat discontinuing their distrubution for 'non-profrssional' users but having it released under another name (possibly also developed by another team?) instead. I would have thought they'd mention something like this in the email but who knows... maybe it will just reappear under another label soon afterwards.

In any case I'd recommend SuSE Linux very much anyone looking for an alternative - their setup and configuration tool YaST is incredibly handy if you're relatively new to the Linux world (like me) and with all these nice KDE apps I'm very close to switching and never looking back....

Though I guess that isn't entirely possible as I still have to have an IE around to see what CSS I have to write to stop it from breaking my pages.....

Kuckus you are correct. I didn't pass on all of the email as I wasn't sure anybody wanted to read it. Here is a link to the "migration center" as RH calls it for people who want to migrate to Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3. I didn't look through everything yet but I'm assuming if you want to move forward with RH your going to have to pay for it.

The link Petskull posted to Slashdot pretty much tells everything the email got says.

well I'm glad you people have a good experience with Linux. I love the OS and can get around in it pretty well (for the most part anyway)
but I tell you. To install a program has become quite the challenge!

But, it has never crashed on me or given me any real problems. It's my modems fault that I can't get online and probably my fault that I can't get programs to install. But alas.....I still have it on a partition on my HD and it will remain there for there until I get a new box.

Anyway, glad that you are back Schitzoboy! Glad that redhat is working well for you

The Fedora Project

yeah, I've been a diehard RedHat fan since I switched from Slackware a long time ago... Recently, I'm beginning to dabble in Mandrake (mainly because they suppot my VAIO laptop better) and, in light of this news, I don't think I'll be switching back..

By the way, winmodem functionality is hard, but not impossible...

I wasn't having any Winmodem troubles, it was all my ISP's fault not liunxs. Bell south are assholes who won't support liunx. I got it working though by having my router dialing in for me. But anyway. I've just upgraded to Fedora and I'm still not having any troubles short of me being a newbie and it takes me a few hours everytime I want to try something new and I need to figure out how to go about it. =)

I may give mandrake a try later after the 9.2 isos are released.

how does your ISP 'not support linux'.... don't support IP standards?

This is the article where I first found out about it. The problem was I wasn't getting valid DHCP information.
