I know there are some wine drinkers here in the Asylum...I'm curious as to your wine likes and dislikes.
I personally am favorable to the 1998 Ruffino Classico Chianti's. I really enjoy these Chianti's with pastas and red sauces. The Chianti really helps with digestion.

I would not consider myself a connoisseur of wine, but I did get to sample some of the very best nectar IMO, while living in Southern France, attending Art School for 2 years.
My personal favourites were Cote du Rhone, the Beaujolais of course and I had a rare occassion to go to the Chateau-neuf -du- Pape estate with a fellow student who just happened to be heir to the wonderful vinyard where we sipped a 1957 CNd Pape over a period of 3 hrs...scruptious!
On the white side, I liked the Bordeaux and one wine that I have been trying to locate here in north america called Pisse-Dru....I think that's how you spell it?
Anyone familiar with it?.
Alsace wine is good too.
I was lucky enough to have my own wine cellar stocked in the 16th century house I lived in with many other fine varieties.
It was a great time over there...I used to drive my moped with a demijon strapped to the back rack, pull up to a Cave, which was like a gas station, and the guy would fill the demis up from a pump , and you pay by the weight of the wine.
Don't get me going about Absente....that's a whole other story.....

heheh....that's funny Ini, I had a feeling Pisse-Dru might have some connection with "pissing"
Yep, Chateau-Neuf- du Pape is very expensive and very good!
I also enjoy the Chiantis, but nothing gets me going like a good bottle of Beaujolais and a slab of aged Roquefort cheese and a bagget!

...yes that would be a "baguette"....I can still smell the wonderful aromas dancing around my head in the French bakeries after all these years.
Aussie wines?....tried a few don't rember which were good or not ...mostly good.
but they do have ideal climate and soil for winemaking.
On a side note, I found it interesting that the Southern French vinyards were covered with round smooth rocks, with very little soil exposed.
They seem to absorb and retain the heat from the sun, to keep the ground warm during the cool evenings...critical for sapling vines, which were also dipped in beezwax prior to planting for added protection against the elements.

Myself I'm more into the more robust tastes and prefer red to white. The Amarone's from Italy is usually very tasty (although strong) and most wines made from the Shiraz and Zinfandel grapes have that pleasant little peppery note to them.
Tried a number of Chateu-neuf-de-papes when I travelled the area and they were all very nice, but if we're talking memorable wines two stands out:
Chateau LaTour 1981
A friend of mine had bought a few for his restaurant and we treated us to the last of them. Dark red bordering on brown with a wonderful taste. This must have been back in -98 sometime.
Chateau d'Yqem 1990
A top notch Sauterne. Can't even remember what we ate, just that sweet explosion of taste. Awesome.
Not a big fan of the Beaujolais Nouveau's. The portugese Periquita is a bargain at least back here. Won a blind test with a group of sommeliers over wines ten times it's price not long ago.
When it comes to Whites, I'd say that Alsace is a favorite region. Try the Riesling Hugel for instance.
Some of the Chardonnays are nice, but many carlifornian ones has too much of that buttery oak flavor for me. And you can't beat a cold portugese Vinho Verde when it comes to a hot summer day. (we're still talking wine, right?)
Interesting enough, it's cheaper to buy some of the very good french wines in Sweden than in France. Last summer I was looking at a 75 euro bottle of red in a wineshop in france and realized that it was about 55-60euro in Sweden. I even have a french friend that always buys a box or two in Sweden before heading home.

French wines are the best wines around, but they are overpriced.
I like Italian wines, because I can actually buy the good ones.
South Africa, Australia, Spain, Chile are also producers of good wines.
Oh, I believe there are some good wines in America also, it's hard to find, but with some luck you may find them

I love German dry white wines.. but don't aske me any names.. I was five years old when I drank it..
However more recently the most delicious wine I have enjoyed was Cabernet d'Anjou from France. a medium dry rosé. I had a few bottles a few years back and have never forgotten that taste. Alas in two years I have not seen it on sale anywhere.

not a connesuir but I enjoy anything red. Happy just ordering red: house red, merlot, whatever red - not in a diner! But a nice restaurant.

I'm like CRO8. I'm not at all a connoisseur but I do enjoy a nice glass of red wine now and then. Usually a Merlot or Beaujolais.
I much prefer beer personally

I don't go much for alcohol. I'm more herbal myself.
But a glass of Kiante(sp?) now and again is nice.
