Topic awaiting preservation: Strange XP - IE6 phenomen

I just experienced a strange thing on my PC that I was hoping that anyone could give me some pointers about what it might have been.

The computer (new HP Presario) had been on for the better part of the day.
Surfed to one of my "daily forums" (known popup hell, but I run GoogleBar) and clicks on a thread.
All of a sudden my browser freaks out. Automaticly scrolls down to the bottom of the page and refuses to go up. Just sits there jittering... This occurs in all open browsers.

Also if I try to use the URL dropdown in the browser to access any other site, I can access the site ok... but I have a cursor in the URL-field franticly trying to get out of the right side of the field.

Tries to shut down the PC for a reboot, but the "standby" option is already in "down mode" and is the only one that I can click.

Solution: Pull the power...


so, I check the same thread with my job pc, and all seems fine.

Reboots my PC, and runs a complete virus scan (Norton running live update) which comes up with nothing.

I'm running Norton FW on the PC and connecting to the web through a DLINK 714 router with built in FW.
PC is running *shudder* Swedish WinXP HE SP1.

To me this sure seems like some malicious code in the system, but shouldn't a newly updated AV handle that?

Possibly silly but was there a key stuck?

Whenever my browser has freaked out like that, I usually had the ctrl or enter key jammed down.

I would guess also that that's the problem: key stuck.
I also had it sometimes and it always were some darn key stuck.

You don't have a joystick or controller plugged in, do you?

could it be the scroll function on the mouse?
do u have a scroller on your mouse?
mine , wireless, does funny things but only when batteries are low.

Since you mention it, it surely had all the telltale signs of the space key being jammed.
The strange thing is that it wasn't. Clean desk, and everything got freaky after one click of the mouse...

No Joysticks plugged in, but a wireless scroll mouse. However, the mouse got new batteries three weeks ago.

Oh, well. at least everything is working now...

IE is a magnet for malicious code.

Anything that runs web code natively on the platform instead of a sandbox is asking for trouble.

Consider using a real browser like Opera or anything with the Gecko engine.
