Hello again.

I understand that many of the people on this board are located in the Netherlands. I have always wanted to visit there so, I am wondering if you can advise me. I am from Chicagoland and have never been to Europe, let alone Sweden, but am toying with the idea of visiting. I have always wanted to go there..

I have a budget of about $1500 and Im wondering how far I could stretch it. Im guessing 2 weeks or more? It would be great to find a way to stay for longer. Possibly if I could stay in youth hostels or if I could work there for a while? Is Stockholm an expensive city?

Also, I am wondering if the rumors are true, that the land is over-populated with tall beautiful blonde women. And that everyone is really laid back and into having a good time (compared to Americans).

Well, I dont want to get too ahead of myself here....

anyone?

I'm confused... are you trying to visit The Netherlands or Sweden? Amsterdam or Stockholm?

Both have pretty blondes

oh sorry.. I guess I am confused.

Well to be honest, both Stockholm and Amsterdam were on my list. Maybe I can visit both. But I would prefer to stay in one place for an extended time.

I guess I meant "Sweden", but now that you mention it, how would you rate Amsterdam. And if I had to choose one to visit, which would it be?

Personally, I'd definitely go with Amsterdam. The Dutch are incredibly cool and the city is my fave. But that's just me 10/10

Do both if you can.

I've never been in Amsterdam but I live in Stockholm so I guess I'd vouch for that

Stockholm is an expensive town compared to the US (at least back in -97 when I last visited), actually, all of sweden is quite expensive.

Some examples:

Hotels - One single bed room goes from 500 SEK or $65/night to 1500 SEK or $195/night depending on season, hotel, weekday or sat/sun. There are a lot cheaper accomodations (youth hostels - more backpacker style with prices from appr 180 SEK or $23/night) where you share room with others if that's an option.

Beer - from 29 SEK or $3.75 to 50 SEK or $6.50/pint depending on the place.

Cigarettes - appr 40 SEK or $5

Mcdonalds - Big & co appr 45 SEK or $5.80

I guess that'll give you a fair idea on the pricing here.
Take a look here http://www.stockholmtown.com/ for more info, it's the official stockholm info site.

Lived in Sweden for half a year (15+ years ago).

Plus, the Girls are *very* easy
Downside, expensive booze and cigs. High taxes on everything.

Amsterdam, I have it on good authority has caffes serving Grass. Of the Narcotic variaty.
Great appeal for an adventurous yank coming from a prohibition state.
Also the whores are highly regarded.

you know, wulfius-kahn, there are indeed minors visiting this place, not all of whom have liberal parents, nor is this Asylum a male only institution.
So tone down your sexism a bit, will ya?
Thanks.

hmm..

well I dont smoke, so that will save some money. But I am sure that staying only one week will leave me wanting more. I wonder if I could take a class and get a job there for the summer.

Im guessing that summer is the best time to visit?

Wulfius - Tell me more about these girls of which you speak.

I checked out the stockholmtown website and it looks like a lot of fun.

So If i understood well you have the choice between cheep Neterland red light or *easy* swedish female if you can afford you private hostel room.

Form my past experience some "east people" maked love for almost all the night what was just a little less disturbing that earing people getting out and in of the 12 bed dorm.

The funny thing was that the women get out naked some time to take a shower or to done a pie. So it was a 12 Euro strip back packer...

Consider to stay at home... 1200 Us it's not that much!

Amsterdam is a lovely city - my family lived there for a short time many years ago and we have many fond memories of the place...

As for the "coffee houses", I heard that the EU recently made Holland change its rules concerning these establishments by having them limit the sale of questionable substances to permanent residents of the country only - visitors to the country may no longer partake. (If you were interested in visiting for that purpose, it may sway your decision to Stockholm! )

But there's plenty else to see and do there! If you don't mind staying at hostels and traveling light, $1500 US could take you on a good long trip just about anywhere in the world... the biggest expense will be your flight there and back. Hope you're factoring that into your budget! It sounds like fun - don't foget to post pictures when you return!

Bah...
-Amsterdam is NOT the biggest Whorehouse in the world
-Amsterdam is NOT the biggest Coffee shop in the world.
-Amsterdam is NOT Stockholm (the distance is 1433km )
-Amsterdam is NOT very representive for the dutch.

If you do want to come over to Europe (either The Netherlands or Sweden) just to get quick sex and get stoned i'd rather like you to stay where you are now. Dutch girls are very emancipated, the most like attention and romance and stuff like that but if you don't respect them they might slap you in the face. And they are right to do so.

However if you dare to look beyond the horizon i could show you a real country with real people. I could also show you some special places if you want to. But if you only care about booze, grass and girls please leave us alone and get drunk in your own town.

Wow what has happened? Let me clarify..

I am interested in going to Stockholm or Amsterdam and am interested in stretching my budget as far as I can - and staying for as many weeks or days as possible. But I also want to be able to do some things in style. All I have is a passport and $1500 US. Possibly I can extend my stay by finding work if laws allow (I havent looked into the details of whether I would need a work visa or not - or if there is work available for me since I only speak english.)

I dont want to do the goofy tourist things, I want to really experience the culture. Partly I want to make this sort of an "artist's retreat" and do some creative work - web design, music, maybe some digital photography, some writing. So I am looking for inspiration, adventure, friends, memorable experiences, and some nightlife too. I am still young, but Im not into the rowdy animal-like behaviour that you may be thinking of.

Thanks very much for the offer and the info.

I am thinking about doing this kind of a trip later in the summer and if it works out, I will definately get in touch. I do actually bike. Im not sure if this is a little or a lot, but back here at home when it is warm enough, I travel 10 miles (16 kilometers) a day 4 days a week. I suppose I could do more, but that is only because I give myself only one hour a day for exercise - due to a busy work schedule. I dont know how well I would do with a full backpack though.

Interesting... from the above replies I am wondering if many of you smoke cigarettes? Around here, they are continually banning cigarettes from restaurants and clubs/pubs. One town after the next. And in some places they are also trying to ban people from smoking as they walk down the streets too. But that is a different story..

Stockholm does seem a little more expensive, but I think that I should try to visit both places.

I would love to get back to Amsterdam someday. I was sick most of the time I was there, so I didn't really get to enjoy the city all that much. It was such a shame...
