Hey,

Maybe this should be in "all browsers suck" but it is a css questions, but move it if need be. Beyond that, can someone tell me why I am getting such a skinny right text column in nn4.7 and getting no scrollbars. works pretty good in ie 5.5 and nn6, but not so good here. I will be putting all the css info in a external file once I get the basic look right and code working.

the site
any help is greatly appreciated.

There is a bit of difference between how different browsers interpret % widths of DIV's.....and it will probably cause a variety of minor problems. For instance, in IE4.0, the 'bodyleft' and 'bodyright' divs overlap by about 2 letter spaces...

The solution? Either revert to old stlye table layouts, or join a large number of designers in forgetting about outdated browsers.

well, that is what I feared. I really did not want to get into the labyrinth of the nested table layout, but at the same time I have to think about the club members and cannot really force them to upgrade, nor do I think I should try to. I was hoping there might be some hack/workaround for this problem.

What are the percentages of browsers used these days? I know there is site with these kind of stats, but cannot remember what it is. maybe I can hope that folks who still have these browsers will not be using the site .

My advice would be to make sure everyone can see you content in NS4.x and pos. have a message which prompts them to upgrade. NS4.x renders tables very badly.

Stats vary according to the type of site you have and your target audience. The problem is that you probably aren't targetting an audience that is as technologically literate as the people who visit this site and so they may not upgrade as often. Its a tricky one to deal with - you can probably spend a while using ugly hacks to get it to work in NS4.x (transparent single pixels gifs, etc.) but I'd go for the upgrade prompt and a little bit of text saying that rather than spending a couple of hours making it look perfecr in NS4.x you have devoted your time to developing content (I don't like sites that say that they work best in IE5 at 800x600 but telling people when they come with NS4.x that the site doesn't look its best is perfectly acceptable).

I've just looked at it in NS4.75 and all the content is visible and the site works - I'd not bother trying to get it looking any better in NS4.x.

okee dokee. we will see how much feedback I get. the good news is only a few pages will use the multiple column look, the bad news is that one of them is the opening page.

So then I assume I will need to put in a browser sniffer thingmabob. Where is the best place to find this explained?

thanks

If you are using PHP then check out some older posts around the asylum (all browsers suck?) if not try here:
