I was wondering... is it actually possible to create a half transparent scroll bar or anything close (yet)?

Well, I believe by playing with the alpha filter in NN6 and IE5+ you should be able to use Doc's most excellent dhtml scroll bar code to achieve such an effect.

Check out my latest bio pages for an example of how it can be implemented:
http://bugimus.com/bios/neng2.html
http://bugimus.com/bios/sheena2.html
http://bugimus.com/bios/sirbugs2.html

Doc has graciously posted what he is calling ZscrollBar to his new Znippets site for all to use.

~and there was much rejoicing~

Ooh yah! Funny to find this thread here, I was just popping in to mention the first major revision of the Zscrollbar script, using the bits and pieces from the Znippets library. http://www.znippets.com/ZscrollBar2/ is the newest pice, and it's darned near auto-configuring, I'm just going to add the flags to let it swell up and fill a screen (or whatever parameters of the screen you set), and the option is still there for hard-coded sizes if desired. The new "liquid" script uses <div> for everything, and of course, Netscape 4.x doesn't handle all the things I need it to all too well. I figure I'll leave the old script linked up off of the site as well, since it works in just about everything that handles layers, but it requires a lot more hard-coded heights and widths and clips and whatnot - still, a good script IMHO.

I'm going to finish the last of the "features" today, and then start in on tweaking the darn thing down for speed and elegance, the "meat" of the script should come out to maybe 7k, and it requires the other Znippets scripts, (maybe another 2-2.5k or so?) This should be the easiest to modify script I've ever done, I've stripped all of the ugly bits down into one script, and one other small script is where all of the variables get set that make it go, woo! I wanna do all my scripts this way, once I'm done I can forget how I ever put that other mess together, heh.

Hmm? I just checked in Opera, doesn't opera do the "addEventListener"? Grumble, I'll have to see if it does the old netscape way, or perhaps the old IE way, poo. (I really dislike Opera.) Hrmph, now it bitches about that event, but it's in an function where it would never process it, why is it bitching? Gad! Why, oh stupidest of stupid browsers, why!!!???

Oh, I made the background for my text area and my scrollbar a semi-transparent (not true opacity, just a transparent image with holes in it), just to show off some, heh. I finished with the centered/not centered flag, simply a toggle you set in the setup file, and also the "sprawl across the screen" toggle. This liquid design stuff is fun! I left myself 72pixels at the top for a new header, seems this script justifies a new design for the site (the existing one is just a temporary thing, too oppressive for the nature of the subject matter.)
