Looking for a script that when you pass your mouse over a link the text would be "echoed" in the background of the browser window, the "echos" would change and move and disappear when you moused out. I had a script that did this but don't remember if it was Javascript or DHTML (pretty sure it was the latter). Click below to see a static sample of what the effect would look like.

Any help wuold be appreciated.

This would be easy to do in Flash, and probally alot easier also. eh?

Well dHTML really is JavaScript, or at least it's made up of it.

I'm not too sure what you'r really looking for here. I would imagine a combination of JavaScript and CSS is what you are looking for here. I guess what you want to do is create it so that when you hover your cursor over the text, layers that were previously hidden, fade in, and then fade out. That's not too difficult.

Dark mentions Flash, which could be used, but I think it would be more practical to use the JavaScript and CSS.

First off... I know that this can be done with Flash, just don't want to use it. Why use Flash for something you can do with functions already built into most browers? Also, it's easier to update/maintain NOT using Flash.

Next, I realize that DHTML/Javascript have many differences and similarities... and it's possible that the script that I'm referring to used CSS, I don't remember. I DO remember that the effect was RANDOM but still configurable. When I first tried it out I had the text "echos" set rather large and it bogged my machine down cosiderably. I believe that I found the script at a compilation site but after much searching I've come up empty.

I DO realize that there must be literally hundreds of ways to make this effect, if someone happens to have a script similar to this and would like to share it, please do. If someone thinks that they can duplicate the effect, please do. If someone knows of a site that has an effect similar, please share. Flash is not an option, neither is shockwave or any other proprietary plugin requiring version.

Thanks for the quick response so far... I'm still looking 'tho

So in other words you want us to write the script for you.

In all seriousness though, this script isn't too bad. You should be able to get through most of it on your own, and consult the Asylum for help. Do you know how to write a JavaScript function? I don't know exactly where you are in terms of CSS and JavaScript. It shouldn't be too hard though for a novice scripter, and even a beginner should be able to get through it with a little help.

I know InI had done a dHtml demo like this but I don't know if it's still online. Perhaps if he's reading this he could share it with you.

We have done so.

InI, I'm pretty sure you were the one who posted a demo page that had some text bouncing around and changing shape just like you would see in a music video or commercial on TV. It was a while back and I believe it basically used some random number generators to achieve the effect by modifying the CSS properties of some text in a div.

It's not a hard thing to do and I remember seeing it and thought you might still have it around. I guess it's possible it was someone else. Come to think of it, it might have belonged to Eddie Traversa at http://dhtmlnirvana.com/

Thanks for the link Bugimus... I checked out all of the tuts and couldn't find the one I'm looking for. If you look at the sample from my original post, just imagine that the "echos" would fade in and out, change size (not font or style) randomly as long as the mouse was over the link. Again, I don't know if this used CSS or not, I just know that it wasn't Flash, I consider myself to be "code illiterate" and between school and my family it's all I can do to get a few minutes to sit at the computer and surf or doodle with PS. ;-)

Jestah, no I don't want someone to write a script for me, just point me to an example or a tutorial. If I were asking about a image effect most everyone would offer up a huge list of links and not even bat an eye. When it comes to code some people (primarily other forums, the crowd here is great) tend to get stingy for some reason. Some are strong in graphics, some are strong in code and some are strong in other areas, that's what's great about forums such as these, we can share knowledge.
