This script works only when alert is added. Without alert it fails

Any ideas on how to solve the problem

corrected duplicate language attribute and added type attribute. no luck as yet

Hmm... can you link us to a version which *doesn't* work? It seems very strange that the alert line alone is causing it to work.

Oh, it appears he's working on it as we speak. When I loaded it it had the alerts and was working.
