I am considering buying a DHTML menu system, just to make my life easyer. I am sick of fighting cross browser scipts. CSS is enough of a pain. The problem is my portfolio site has to work on both mac and pc.

So I am considering several options:

A. Flash MX menus and/or entire flash site. The problem being being if there is no flash? How would be the best way to deal with it. Can you have DIV containg the flash and replace it with a SSI, using javascript or do you have to use a splash detect skeem. I hate splash screens.

B. I am also considering Sothinks DHTMLMenu, It look flexable enough. Seems cheapish, fast enough and would save a lot time. It seem to work on most browsers I have tired. Thou I am a little concern about it working on Safari on mac. My old G3 can't run Jaguar so I can't test the examples. I one of you have access to Safari could you try it. Other wise I have to go to the Apple store and try it.

C. Some kind of cross platform api, or open source prebuilt. I have seen several that would be useful. Any recomendations. In this area.

I do have this funny hang up about, using others code, I simply feel better using a comercial solution. Werid I know. I would feel better if perhap if I got personal approval. Funny I due use Apache, Ghostscript, PHP and perl with out a problem.

jstuartj: Hmmmmmmmm well I wouldn't recommend option A and if you want a non-commercial option then see:

:FAQ: How do I make a cross-browser menu system?

Brother Cake's solution seems as cross-browser (and flexible) as you'd want.

How about not using one at all? Many sites seem to survive without them. Just a thought.

Thinks I supect that what I will do, I do know better realy. The though my mind. But considered using it in my gallery section or perhaps some other sites. Being able to compact the menu into a smaller location, and ease future expansions has it's advantages.

I think I will pick the software up, and try the demo. It's cheep enough just as a toy, It may prove useful someday.

Oh, I did try manage to find a mac running Safari, the nice guys a the microcenter let my try the site on their machine. The example seemed to work just fine under beta version 2.

I'll second Drac on this, but only because I got sick of cross-browser issues about five years ago.

I would honestly go with Flash before I went with a DHTML menu system, and if you know how I feel about Flash that should tell you how I feel about DHTML...
