A little while back there was a thread in the main Ozone section about inspirational sites. Every one was really taken with one Flash site in particular, I don't recall the URL but it was quite nice....and it had a PopUp window that no one seemed able to block. A few folks even commented on how unusual that was .

Well, I finally figured out how they did it. They attached this sort of ActionScript to the opening frame of the flash movie-

getURL("javascript:window.open('popUp=popme.html','pup','width=300,height=200');popUp.focus");

Of course disabling javascript completely will stop this sort of nonsense, but how many of us are willing to surf with a crippled browser?

I trust none of us here at the Asylum will use this sort of thing for any less than noble purpose. Please remember, that with great power comes great responsibility. We must resist the lure of the Darkside....

I don't have Flash installed (I despise flash) but even if I did my Proxomitron pop-up blocking filter would block such a pop-up without modification. AFAIK any of the anti-popup filters written by Proxo heavy-weights like JD5000 will already block such a pop-up. Not sure about Proxos' default config since I haven't used it in years but my guess is that it will too.

There are so many people today who loath pop-ups that I think we do our sites (and our visitors) a great disservice by using them. On-request pop-ups are ok though. Most folks I know do not attempt to disable those but they may rewrite them on the fly. ;-)

I stand corrected. This will only by-pass browser based pop-up blocking; not proxy solutions. Chalk one up for the good guys......
