Your approaching this the wrong way. Too many people try and create the object, this is why you don't know where to start. Instead, break the object down to it's simplest forms, then all you have to do is create the basic forms and beofre you know it, you have an image of rope.

Rope is little more than a patern repeated along a path.

Now get crack'n.

I was watching some dvGarage video tutorials of my friends, and have realized the importance of having the object in front of you. So, get a rope. Look at the rope, study it, look at the way the threads are woven together, the texture, the makeup of the threads. Everything.

The first thing you need is a wireframe of sorts.

I agree completely with the other guys, study rope, become one with the rope.. just kidding.

Once you have that done, sketch out a basic look, plan your rope width and how it will be placed.

When this looks decent you can consider textures. Here's an example of something that could pass as rope texture (it was actually for a sword hilt originally).

apply the texture, correct for color, add lighting etc. It isn't easy and it'll take a lot of work to make it truely realistic. Then again if you really want to do this perfectly you should try a 3d renderer but those aren't cheap.

Very well said Dracusis.

Patrick - Please don't underestimate the importance of what Dracusis has said.
