Topic awaiting preservation: punched hole through paper or card... (Page 1 of 1)

Ok my turn.

Imagine there was a tight sheet of paper facing you like a window.... and a jagged rock was thrown through it at high speed from behind punching a ripped but tidy hole. If you then managed to dodge the flying rock how would you create that remaining visual effect in photoshop?

Before I get scolded for not trying, I'll be back in a while with my attempt.

Just to note right off... if the paper is "tight", then you might not actually see much of a hole; if any. Unless it's a fair sized object going through it.
You'll see a few tear lines where the paper is separated. Some frayed edges, a bit of a 'paper curl' effect. That's about it.

I drew the real thing and airbrushed it... but I wanted more of a shredded exploded look.

Try getting a piece of paper and poking a pen or your finger through it. You should get a pretty good idea of what it should look like.

The picture you've got now doesn't look like paper because paper is more elastice. Meaning once the jagged pieces have been distorted they usually curl back to the approximate same location. Metal, on the other hand, isn't very elastic and tends to keep its distorted shape and that's what the picture actually looks like.

One thing to keep in mind is that your tear-aways are going to form a rough "whole" of your hole when they're bent back in. Silence is right about the elasticity of paper, especially when held taut.

The best advice is already there "get a piece of paper, tear through it, observe, recreate."

You have shown the ability already to add the needed shading and all to make the 3D effects that you need to pull this off.

So, going backwards, step one is to simply observe.
