Topic awaiting preservation: Photosop elements

Just curious - has anyone checked out and used Photoshop Elements?
I talked to one of the sales people, and they were so photoGRAPH oriented that they just couldn't tell me what drawing, rendering and other uses Elements had. I asked for a list of the tools, and that brought a pregnant silence.........I'm wondering if it has things like the airbrush, other brushes, lasso / polygon selectors, layers, and stuff like
that. I'm going to try to learn more on the Net, but personal info would be better.

Don't do it. I once got a version free (Free. A version of a 600-dollar program for free.) together with my wacom tablet, and it just a very, very limited version of photoshop. I believe all the tools are still there, and it's a nice program to get your feet wet with PS, but in the end it will not do. If you don't have much mone to spend, i'd recommend the free program called the GIMP. I've heard lots of good stuff about it, and seemingly it's comparable to photoshop version 4 or 5.

well,here at work i got photoshop elements. and yes, mahjqa is right. it has all the tools but some important functions are just missing...but for a home user who just wants to play around a bit, its very nice
its also quite easy to handle. one more disadvantage is, that is hasnt got something like image ready...and thats a big hole in a graphic program.
go with gimp, thats an excellent program for free and can also read psd files.

I have two version of PS on my computer. One of them is PS 6 which I pirated illegally and hate myself for and hardly ever use anymore. The other is my liscenced version of Photoshop Elements that came with my tablet which I use for almost everything. It has all the filters, all the brushes, all the layer effects. It's missing the path tool, line tool, and channels (and probably more that I just don't know of yet). I love my Photoshop Elements more than PS 6. If You don't want to pay a really high price for the latest version of Photoshop 7... I suggest looking into Photoshop Elements. I haven't used GIMP before... Although, I like the idea of another program being able to read .psd files. I can certainly say, though, if it's painting tools you're looking for, PS Elements has many-a-brushes to choose from.

I have used The GIMP. It's a really nice program if you are on Linux. But, I found it to be really, really, ... reduculously unstable on Windows.

Another program you might consider that works pretty well on Windows is PaintShop Pro. The price has been going up over the last several years. I think it is about $100.00(US) right now. It can open Photoshop files and has many of the tools available in Photoshop. It is certainly worht a look.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with Photoshop Elements.

Insider: I have a copy of Photoshop LE that came with a scanner and in addition to no Pen Tool, its support for different graphics modes is very limited. I don't remember exactly which ones it does support, but I have had a problem with it in the past because I created a CMYK image in Photshop 6.0 and could not import it into LE.

Doesn't Paint Shop Pro have the auto selected gradient shape? What I mean is that you select an area/region with the wand and then your gradient takes on that shape for say... a center generated radial gradient. I remember using something like that on a mac and it was a really cool function that I haven't found anywhere else.

I recently purchased a copy of PSE 2.0 in my ventures into the realm of legitimacy. I'm not sure I like it. For the price it is a good piece of software. I just think the usability sucks. Of course I come from a PS background, that might taint me. Are there any sites/forums that expound on the PS-like capabilities of PSE instead of the photo editing stuff? I was actually looking for a PS replacement... I might just have to give The Gimp a shot.

I recommend Paint Shop Pro. It's what I used before I made the jump to Photoshop.

PSP cost only a fraction of the price of PS, but it's got most of the features you need to start off with.
