I've been working on a cartoon looking moon for my latest pinball sim ( Sci-Fi Pinball ) and I've been failing miserably a friend of mine came up with this in a 3d prg...

and tho it's a lot better than my attempts it's still a ways from what I'm aiming for.

I really don't post a lot here but maybe someone remembers me just thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions, after a couple weeks playing with this I'm almost out of motivation...

thanks all
Stein

I guess I'm really looking for some motivation after spending so many hours in photoshop with rendered clouds, spherising and other various filters I feel like I've wasted a lot of time.

I would show my examples but they are already in the trash, I tried manually drawing ovals and connecting them to the main shpere to serve as craters (look really bad) just a lot of trial and error all for nuthin, I was really hoping for some discussion --- I'm not looking for someone to do it for me! --- I've done this much and I mean to finish it with my own skills.

if anyones done anything similar I'd love to see it, or maybe just an idea to get me started. I'd like to do this in Photoshop as I've always felt a good 2d image is nicer to look at than a 3d render.

'Googling' images always is great for quick examples, but cartoon moons are not that common

vpStein: Why not avoid the problem of making a 'realistic' cartoon moon (if that is even possible?) and go for a more cartoonlike feel - half moon with the man in the moons face possibly?

I'm still not clear what you would like? Suggestions as to how you can recreate the "cartoon" moon in PS ? Or how to add to the image? Do another example in PS to illustrate what you are attempting, and post it up.

It might be more cartoon-ey if you lose some of the detail and the face is a must IMHO, for a cartoon moon. How cartoon-ey the face is can define the cartooniness. Sad moom, happy moon, not quite a moon...

run "The Clangers" through any decent search engine, for examples of a very similar moon.

I really wish I had PS on this machine so I could illustrate what I'm talking about pictorally but here goes.

For the basic texture, go to my (sorta) tutorial -> http://students.seattleu.edu/alo

This will give you a texture you can work with. You can tweak the settings to your hearts content for different variations. When I first did it I thought it looked like sand but it could also pass for sandstone or the moons basic texture.

Now that you have a square image we're going to start painting on it. Create a layer above the main texture layer (merge all the layers first if that makes it easier) and label it shadow and another layer above that and label it highlight. Now, I forget which is which at the moment but set the layer blending mode on one to color dodge and the other to color burn. Basically you want to be able to paint on the shadow layer with black and the highlight layer with white and have them lighten and darken the main picture.

For the main surface, just make a circular selection and blacken everything outside the circle on a layer between the main one and the highlight/shadow layers. You'll want to be able to edit this later so that your craters can "pop out" of the main silhouette.

Now, take a big brush at a very low opacity and brush a curving swath of shadow around the side of the moon in shadow and then paint a highlight in the same way on teh opposite side. This is all elementary stuff and you shouldn't have any problems so far.

To make the craters, just paint opposing semi-circles using the highlight/shadow layers. Play around with it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Now, after reading through all of this, I've made it as clear as I can but I would rather have pictures to back up the technique. I'll see if I can get some shots for you when I get home.

thanks guys, I was so busy today I'm just now sitting down to read this thread and it's well past midnight here.

Emperor, good idea, kinda like the old mickeyD's mac tonite character I tried something similar already and it didn't look too bad but it didn't fit too well with the surrounding table elements, unfortunately.

That Clangers moon is almost exactly what I was envisioning, I hadn't realised until seeing that that I was making my craters too big! thanks, that's the best example I've seen

Silence, no problems following that. I would get started right now on a new moon if I wasn't so dead tired... I really appreciate the texture help, will start on it as soon as I'm able tmrw

Not sure exactly what you need, but maybe something in a profile ?

And there`s always the old swiss cheese route.

yes, I`m bored.

docilebob, that moon is sweet! I like the bandana he's wearing. I think I'm needing a full moon though (hey now!) if you look at the table pic I linked at the top of the thread ( Sci-Fi Pinball ), the simple gray moon that exists there now is to be replaced with my new, more cartoonish, moon. The pic will be somewhat in the distance and so finer deatils get lost. A half moon unfortunately doesn't work that pic is so cool tho I had to try it in the table just to see what it looked like

String thru my eye! Yyeowch! this board is priceless! just coming here and looking at the pics and sigs is great

well...try it out with the moon your friend made...I like that one...from a distance (and possibly if it was cel-shaded) it'd look good on that table I think.

What program did your friend use for it...if he used 3D Studio MAX I can use the Ink 'n paint material to achieve the cartoonish look on it easy as anything.
