Well I'm trying to get back in the saddle drawing pencil portraits after a long break and have managed to do this
Now I'm rather pleased with the way this turned out myself, but in doing so I'm being blinded to the multitude of improvements I know I can make.
So, please help me... I crave crits!
Oh, and I got the Asylumites OK to use her in the pic and to post it
(side note)
I just realized that this is the second last binary post number for quite a while for me.
I need sleep.

hey nimraw nice pic.
i love hand drawing its so much more emotional? than digital stuff. you can just let go and express yourself in a way i can never achvie when working with digital
as for your drawing, a couple of things: dunno if its just the scan, but i think you could work up a bit more tone and contrast. i think it looks a bit washed out. (maybe thats the effect you going for though?)
also the nose looks like it has a fairly sharp angle on the edge, maybe soften it out a little?
the cheek area works really well i think, though mabye more detail/contrast around the ear?
just my opinion hope its of some help

While I am a fan of traditional art, i undoubtly disagree with you on that "hand drawing its so much more emotional? than digital stuff.". Its not the medium you use what express emotion, its the emotion itself you have while doing your work.
And i really like the drawing. I'd critique, but all the few glitches i found were already stated. :P

ear too far back, too small seemingly
tip of nose a bit high for a person, though could have been subject
eyebrow seems to end early, just before tip of eye (thin part on our left side)
final error: i dont have her phone number j/k
nice shading and proportioning dude, great hair, love the pencil tech you have

Looks great, excellent work.
as for comments, the earing is a tad out-liney looking, its stands out oddly somehow, and nose lips are smaller, and her ear is a bit too bright compared to to reference.

Thanks for the tips all.
It seems that the everlasting problem for me when doing pencil drawings is that I'm a bit shy regarding contrast. It's not the first time I hear the same crit, I can tell you...
This pic *does* have a bit more of it in the paper version (I'm no scanner genius) but it's still a bit to "flat", as you have pointed out.
The ear you say... For the record I'd like to state that I hate ears and teeth! No matter what I do, they always come out weird!
Oh, well.. I guess its time for play, fiddle, learn then
Hopefully I'll get the time to do a v2.0 from scratch using the same reference during next week.
Perhaps I'll dare to lay on the lead a bit thicker on that one...

well i have no crits....sorry. I am no artist but I love it. When the image was loading I knew that was Shii. So, that tells me that you did a good job on rendering the photo. Have to see the original now.
The hair is just fantastic. It looks very real.
I thought this was kind of funny:

My only complaint is that the earing stands out too much and doesn't seem to look good with that ear, to my eyes. Maybe what I mean is that the earing has more definition than the ear, which looks softer/blurrier, and hence looks out of place.
But my crits aren't even worth 2c, more like 2/3 of a c, so..
[edit: Great job on the hair, imo.]

Overall a good start...while a little weak in the construction (anatomically) you seem to have a good sense of form and light....which could be pushed a few steps ahead with more variation in texture.
If you are into this type of "tight" imaging I highly recommend this site for some inspiration...maybe it's been posted before?, but still worth checking out.....
