I recently found a killer tutorial for creating a light beam here:
http://www.excelsium.net/portfolio/tutorials/lighttutorial/

i was thinking that it would make a very interesting comet or the technique for the beam itself would be useful for creating an image i was thinking about.

The type of image i was imagining would have a city seen from above and a bright beam of light hitting it at an angle (like a streaking asteroid/comet). Shockwaves (maybe ovals of faded white or sumthing??) emanating from the point of impact. The whole point is im looking for a way to take a picture of a city (perspectve view, like from a helicopter) and turning it into a city hit by a comet.

I couldnt find a very good pic for it so if u guys came across one that would be good, but im also very interested in tips about how to make realistic looking impact picture (with shockwaves and everything) .

Any tips would be helpful

What you describe makes me think to the scene in AKIRA when there's the huge explosion in NEO-TOKYO.

As for the image of a city, you can browse the :FAQ: Do you know any good sources for stock photograph?

Hope that helps

[edit] One day, I'll learn how to make a proper link to the FAQ [/edit]
