Just me having fun again... I still have some work to do on this.... The beads, his pants, maybe her dress, and a little more detail on her head scarf. This is just more fun practice. Yes, I am into 'Shaman King' and i just had fun coloring a panel of the manga.

More definition!

One continuous "problem" I've been noticing with your colorings is that you're just putting a flat color down and then shading it a little bit. Make the highs higher and the lows lower! Your images lack serious depth which is hurting their overall feel.

Anyone can color in between the lines, but it takes a keen eye to bring out the form of the objects being colored.

Quite well noted 'nax. I will keep that in mind. Maybe a good dose of traditional re-studying would help.

Couldn't agree more with Synax.

I find it very difficult to find anything to comment on in many of your coloring jobs.

It just needs..... more.

Make it *FEEL* like something.

More pop (depth) is my guess. Your colouring is a little flat right now because you're not being daring with your tones (I had the exact same problem too) or your colour. You just need to go for it and add more darkness, more light, more shading of different colours rather than minor tones.



This is just a 2 min quickie but you'll get the idea. I'd also suggest studying your favourite artist's techniques. Maybe even make a study of copying their artwork to see how they use their colours and how far they go in their shading.

Forgot to add....

Over at Concept Art, there's a thread called the "Coloring Book" or some such thing. People put up their lineart for anyone and everyone to practice their colouring. It's a great opportunity to practice with some very good artists' works and also an opportunity to see how a group of people colour the same image. I've been doing it myself for the practice.

There is an area similar to that thread on http://www.digitalwebbing.com/forums There is a Colorists Showcase where other colorists can show off their work and pick up lineart. I have been posting there as of recent. I definately do see what you mean. Thanks for the advice guys.

Looking better Wolfen! Her face is much better with the added contrast, the hair too. But you could still turn it up a notch

Play with the image>>adjust brightness/contast levels - not to bypass your way out of a painting step, but just to see how far you could possibly take it with your shading. Don't save when you adjust, just try to use it as a guide as to how far you want to go. It sometimes helps you plan the end product.

Forgive me if I'm beating, maiming and mutilating a dead horse here, but:

As has been pointed out, this painting could benefit greatly from some contrast. As of now, you've defined a lightsource, but you haven't made it very dymanic. This is also compounded by the fact that the picture itself isn't very dynamic. It looks very static. Mostly, this is due to the camera angle, which doesn't look very inspired.

But back to the lighting. It's too soft; muted. All the shapes are uniformly lighted. You've chosen a lightsource, now play with it a little bit. I think it would improve the picture a lot.
