Okay, can somebody explain to me exactly how frames detract from a site? That is, do they hinder search engine placement? How? By hiding the actual content of the site text? And can this be remedied by using a robot.txt?

thanks in advance

I just find them pointless. You can do includes with javascript, php, perl, etc and it still does pretty much the same thing for most purposes. Except that it's a little harder using frames to do certain things like have a navigation menu with drop down (because the drop down would have to be on one side of the frame or the other since they're not technically the same window). Personally, I think it's just easier to have everything in one window using the same resources than having to write the frame name and location of a variable that is in a frame when you want to use it in a different one. There are still uses for frames, but I'm hard pressed to think of any off hand.

I believe, though I'm no expert at search engines, that they do in fact make it maybe a little harder to be crawled. No technical knowledge on that, though. Just a guess.

Hope this answer makes sense. It doesn't make any to me.

Not to mention that links to direct pages (when they get spidered) within the frameset now aren't using the frames. So the site falls apart unless you build in detection/correction.

Frames don't appear the same across all browsers, either. Different resolutions can cause "interesting" scrolling issues.
