Think about what a table is in any form of print media - it displays data. That's what they are meant to do in HTML as well. Now, they have a lot of advantages that made them ideal for layouts in the past, but that is changing. And also, like I said, if you do end up using tables, all you would need is one table with 3 cells (one <tr>, three <td>'s).
