Well, I feel myself dame. But I cannot figure out what is the character entiry for back slash??? ( \) I am trying to make web site for my operating system class. Pretty important to use back slash. Wow, wow.....I saw through character entiry list at www.w3schools.com . But seems to be hopeless. Is there anyone who knows this???

But I wonder why just backslash doesn't work for me. My tutor has a web site. I saw source. He coded jsut c:\ then it is fine. How strange it is. Do you have any idea why same code works different way??? I am using IE5. Wow, wow,. wow....

Where are you trying to insert the slash?

[edit: Because it should work normally in 90% of places. The only place you need to worry about it is within quotes in a scripting language like JavaScript.]

My backslash has been changed into W with funny bar on it.

And yes. I want to agree with you. My tutor's site runs propery using exactly same code. But when I opened up my html file through IE5, it happens. Do you know why???

I'm unable to duplicate the problem.

First, try replacing > with &amp;gt; (the character entity for the greater-than sign)

If that doesn't work, post a link to the page and we can take a look at it.

Maybe it's an IE 5 bug?

Oh, my god!!! It is working now. There is absolutely no problem at all.

Well, so are there heaps possibilities of IE bug???? How much can I relay on what I code to see what I will get??? If browser doesn't show my code properly, how do I know if I am right or not....?

And I don't think that there is character entity for \, is there???

Well, there's a character entity for every character, but most of them are obscure like &#123; (for example).

All browsers have bugs. That's part of why you need to know the standards, so that you know when a browser is doing the wrong thing. However, the easiest way to test if a browser is behaving incorrectly is to see what happens on other browsers. Mozilla, for instance, is a good browser with very few bugs.
