Hey all. Thought I'd try you on this thing I can't get right for 2 days now.

Check the lines on this pic

usually the black lines are the bg color of the table and a cellpadding of 1 when the cell color is set to contrast.

as the pic shows the (nav) table overlapping the page content table. that pic is not a screenshot. I cant make html do this. I got very close but no ribbon. I am often told I do things too complicated.. can someone step in and shed some light here for me? please and thank you.

I'd say that this isn't the work of tables alone.
It looks like the containers (tables, divs, paragraphs) is styled and positioned through CSS.

Using CSS enables you to place things anywhere in the window with the help of the attribute "positioning", then by using z-index you can control which element that lies "on top" of another.

What you need to do is read up on CSS, take a first look in the eminent faq, here are some info: http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/FaqWiki/shownode.php?id=228&sortby=rating
You can also find a lot of info in the CSS section, this thread http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum8/HTML/000563.html gives some info on positioning.

^ Yep.

Get tables out of your head, readup on CSS - the resources DmS posted are great places to start.

You will specifically need to look into the z-index and border attributes. The positioning can be accomplished with either the position attribute or by playing with the margins.

I will look into that but I really need this quicker than learning this.

Temporarily, if it was a background only.. are there any propers about this to make it stable to diff browsers/screen res'?

I don't understand the question - what do yo mean 'background only'?

And we all need things quicker than it takes to learn...but that's life

Yup. Clean code, ease of use. That's why we love CSS. Take the time to learn it and you won't regret it.
