quick question, probably a simple answer. It seems like all of a sudden that I cannot get my view source to work. I am using ie 6.0, and it used to work but doesn't any more. I have check through my preferences and internet tools options and do not see anything obvious. anyone have any ideas? they will be much appreciated.

thanks

Perhaps the registry setting with the path to Notepad somehow got messed up or lost... try changing the value of this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Default HTML Editor\shell\edit\command

to

"C:\Windows\notepad.exe %1" (If you've installed Windows elsewhere you'll have to replace C:\Windows with the correct path)

You get there via Start > Run > regedit.exe - be careful not to change anything else though, as that might cause all kinds of problems.

In case this doesn't help or seems to complicated googling for a small tool called "TweakUI for Windows XP" which lets you change the editor more comfortably should bring you to a download page at microsoft.com.

Try clearing your Temporary Internet Files.

I have run into this problem with IE6 and pages that my PHP scripts output.

I don't have any answers for you and was just asking the same question myself the other day. I can tell you that I am usually able to view source after I reload the page in question.

I have also found that this seems to be IE (5.5 and 6 at least) specific as I don't have the same trouble viewing source of the exact same pages in Mozilla, Opera, or Netscape.

I know this doesn't help, but I thought I'd let you know your not alone.

wcr one: Yeah I have similar problems on certain pages and I think it might be a client -side thing and may be connected with XHTML and DOCTYPEs - is there any specific pages you have noticed this problem on? I get it on most of the pages of the GN but also on some other vBulleting forums.

thanks for the empathy butcher. it means a lot in my time of need. also, your bit about reloading was spot on. how strange.

emps, it is almost all pages these days, including these very forum pages. I know I used to be able to see them, and am almost sure it wasn't in nn because the version we have is 4.7shit and I rarely use it.

wasn't a temp file problem. hmmm, will look at that registry idea, tho I know I was knocking around in preferences and saw notepad was set as the default html editor.

thanks all

bill
