Then people realized they were browser dependent, as IE and Netscape chose different technologies (unsurprisingly). By then, CSS typographic support was good enough that nobody cared about them anymore. I've never used embedded fonts myself, just never found any good uses for them. I'd recommend you get to know typography with CSS. I've seen some pretty amazing stuff done to just ordinary web-safe fonts...
