Seeing as i have finally decided to actually design a functional and fully operational blog site, I am wondering about embedded Fonts. I am just wondering if it is a bad idea or one that is ok. I figured I'd ask before I go into uncharted territory in my experience designing.

Can you do it while keeping the page valid ( validator.w3.org )? And can you use CSS to specify alternate fonts for users whose browsers don't support the embedded font feature? If so, there shouldn't be any problem with that.

How does it work, exactly?

Patrick: I think Embedded Fonts were thought to be A Good Thing a few years ago but support has really slipped away (like Active Desktops/Push and Pull). I think with better browser support for CSS2 (esp. the font styles) that this kind of thing just wasn't being used anymore.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Yeah, when embedded fonts first came out, they were all the rage. Then people realized they were browser dependent, as IE and Netscape chose different technologies (unsurprisingly). By then, CSS typographic support was good enough that nobody cared about them anymore.

I've never used embedded fonts myself, just never found any good uses for them.

I'd recommend you get to know typography with CSS. I've seen some pretty amazing stuff done to just ordinary web-safe fonts...
