It has been bothering me for a long time now, why is height considered to be an illegal attribut to the table properties, and what alternatives are there?

Are there recent browsers that don't support height?

Well, this depends very greatly on what DOCTYPE you are using....as what is and is not valid is based soley on the DTD in question.

We'll need more details about what you are doing in what situation to properly answer your question.


One quick answer, however, would be that height is generally a visual rather than a structural issue, and is therefore better handled via CSS.

Well I have my table height set at 500....

like <table width="750" height="500">
And i use it in <Td height...> too...

What doctype supports height? And if it depends on the doctype, it works on all browsers?

I would imagine the HTML 4.0 doctype supports height in a table...

The "height" attribute for tables is deprecated in all versions of HTML.

In terms of browser support, though, the answer is no, I don't imagine any modern browser would suddenly decide to stop supporting the height attribute.
