I am not sure if HTMLTidy would do this, but it might be worth a shot. It turns out that A List Apart ( [url=http://www.alistapart.com]http://www.alistapart.com[/url] ) has an article titled "Better Living Through XHTML" ( [url=http://www.alistapart.com/articles/betterliving/]http://www.alistapart.com/articles/betterliving/[/url] ) supposedly does a good job of walking you through the process and tells you about HTMLTidy.
