Would I be better off suggesting another company that I have worked with and know a little bit better? This is going to be a fairly expensive project requiring many many man hours. I don't want to intrust it to a company that doesn't remember meeting with me three times.
You got the half of your choice made. I'd report that to the company who wants the website done. What else? You're making more money than I ever had the opportunity to, do I get a fee on each cool advice? Ain't that the definition of a consultant? 2 minutes typing, geesh it will cost.. :) Just a bad joke. Seriously, a large project that involves large costs has to de befined on a very, EXTREMELY clear basis, very well planned, if it fails, it could cost more than just its original price. Being working on a badly done Access database system (they tried to make a MS Sql without MS Sql), I can tell you it costed huge bucks to the company, caused a lot of problems and costs. A whole lot.. So why entrusting a small messy/shady company, until it has a perfect portfolio and very good reputation? (sigh, by saying this, I can understand some assholes who chose not to trust the company that employed me as a consultant, so I'm doing something I would have hated done to me). On the other hand, some big companies happen to lack organisation (it is hard to "move" fast for a crowd), but it never seems to last. Messy shady+big project = shite. Here in Switzerland, we make "offer calls" for such projects, hoping to receive well planned offers. Such offers are never enough to start the project, though, which is normal. Just a "well done draft" or presentation.
