Topic: register as a company

heh heh. I asked a similar question way back in October! Deja vu all over again!

Actually you know, I do have another question. . .what does "registering" a company actually mean? Am I applying for a license? A trademark?

All I want to do i register my domain name (of course, without the ".com") so nobody else can use it!

In many places you can start working as a business without registering your business. However, I see you are from New York where they seem to legislate almost everything . If you live in a town, go to the city hall and ask them how to register your company name. You can also register your company name with the state throught the state's trademark office.

The purpose of this process is to ensure that your company name will be unique in the juridiction where you are registering it. This helps to keep people from getting into conflicts because two or more comapanies start using the same name and later find they are both using the same name.

One more thing you should know... You can't really register the name of a company. When you register a trademark with the state or with the US Patents and Tradmark office, you are really registering the name of a product. For example, if you sell a JavaScript editer called "CRO8 Editor", you can register either "CR08" or "CR08 Editor" as the name of the editor. Even though this may be the same as the name of your company, what you are registering is the name of the product, not the name of the company.
