Could you not reduce your hours with your current employer (you have been flexible with them so why shouldn't they) and work on the new venture part time... Slowly does it. If it takes off then go for it, if it goes tits up you still have a job.

Then again I have no idea of what you are doing so I could not possibly pass sensible comment.

If its advice you are after then the only thing I could add at this stage is when you wake up in the morning, promptly shout out 'Brucey' - it will change your life.

I don't have any experience in this and it is almost 3am, so I'm not sure how serious you should take my advice. But here we go anyway

If this business is as promising as you make it out to be I would have gone for it. Lower the amount of work you do for your current employer as much as possible, and spend the extra hours working at the new business. If you can't get enough time away from your current job to start the new business, consider which of them you would rather spend your life working at and go for it.

If it should turn out to not work out as you tought, you should have enough skills and recommendations (and maybe even a degree) to get you a good job at another company...

It feels like you more or less have made up your mind, you want this but you feel the small nagging "what if..." at the back of your brain, right?

I know, I'm there myself, at least mentally.
During this year I've been getting more and more "on the side" offers that easily could have been billable for a small one man company and I'm considering starting something up to handle this (the tax laws here is absolutley ridicilous though).

However I don't have a loan offer to add to the equation.

In your situation I'd sit down and consider these things:
1 - You say "loan" what happens if it doesn't work out after a year?
Do I have to pay this loan back?
What are the terms on that?
Can you handle the terms if you can't get another job quickly?

2 - What if it all goes well?
Does the person who fronted the money any stakes in your business?
If so, how is this deal constructed?
Can you live with that construction?

3 - Have you got paying clients?
You must have a positive cash-flow pretty quickly!
Even if you have capital to keep you afloat for a year, this year will pass very quickly, believe me.

4 - Have you really got the stamina/will for this, including support from the ppl close to you to do this on combo with school?
(this is not personal, it's a legitimate Q to ask yourself)
You not only have to create your products, you have to market them and yourself at the same time. Developing products to sell when done requires that you create a market for them as you develop them, this will create more than a 40 hr week, believe me!

My brother is a photographer running his own company, real life weeks for him is like this:
One small shoot for a client generates appr 4 8hr days in the lab, he needs 2-3 shoots a week to stay afloat with studiorent, expences and a reasonable pay check.
This makes 64-96 hours a week...

To get these 2-3 shots a week he also has to market himself, meet and hunt new clients.
Then, to get payed, he needs time to do his books and find time to bill the clients.

It's hard work!

I'm not putting you down here, just pointing out some things to consider.
The bottom line, once you know how this applies to you, is that if you really want to do this, do it now, before your financial and family obligations stands in the way for it.
