how do you create on spline inside of another to make a cutout (like a donut)?

Assuming you're using 3d studio max
Just attach them together.
Turn one of them into an editable spline, then scroll down to attach, click on it, then click on the other spline. It should only count the space between them now.

ok, I had you up until that "It should only count the space between them now." part...

edit: oh, ok...... I stared it until I got it and I'm cool now...

Sorry, I meant only the space between the 2 splines is considered when 3d studio max modifies it.
Example, with a small circle inside a large circle, once joined if you were to extrude this, would give you a cylinder with the same radius of the large circle, with a hole in the middle taken out with the radius of the smaller circle.

So, like a 3d O.

Still assumng that you're in MAX, under create, the spline primitives, there's one called 'Doughnut' or 'Donut' (depending on which country your using)...this creates exactly what you were looking for.

yeah, but I was making a complicated shape with numerous nested splines and could just use that...

True, true. I don't know that if you nest three splines inside one another what exactly it will do when you extrude it though...lets go see...Cool! It works out to two tubes, one inside the other...good program...sit! Beg MAX! Good Max!

no, I don't mean nested inside each other... I mean...

ok, I made a skull and it has two eyes, etc...

umm, why don't you just draw out your splines as you want them, then use the attach multi to make them into one big object. Max will do the rest, its good like that.

Indeed it will...that skull sounds interesting, can we see it when it's done?

it's just an extruded skull channel

...it looks stupid... you'll laugh...

When you talked about cutting out splines in it I realised I was just an etruded shape, but I still like to see other people's work, no matter how simple <g>
