hi, i'm kinda new in this section of the asylum, i mean the 3d part...
ok so i'm planing to get into game bussiness, probably character modeling.. i'm learning maya and trying to model with polygones but mainly i don't know what else to learn ,or maybe theres a better program for poly modeling there???

A lot of people use Wings 3D to compliment their high-end 3d soft of choice. It uses winged edge technology, so the underlying fundamental is a bit different. Once you get the hang of it, though, it's all good.

Oh, and for pure polygonal modelling, 3D Studio MAX, with it's subdivisional modelling tools is by far the better modelling program. Maya is better on the nurbs and splines ned of things, which is good for organic shapes and smooth deformations, but MAX was made for game modelling. There are plugins for all the major model types for games, like QUake 3, soldier of Fortune, Unreal, all of them and many more. You can still do all of this with Maya, it's just alot easier to do in MAX

Yup skaarj is bang on the nail, max is the best out there, its not cheap, but if you are planning on game modelling you could always download gmax from http://www.discreet.com it's free and is basically 3dsmax without the render engine its aimed at game modelling purely...

i don't know that i'd say max is the best, but its definitely the most widely used when it comes to the game industry. poly modeling is pretty similar from package to package tho, anything you learn using wings or another program can be pretty easily applied to max or maya or anything else.

gmax question for you max guys, does it offer any animation capabilities or is it just the max modeler?

Fig: the only thing missing out of gmax from 3ds max is the render engine, and the ability to export other than through certain formats... whats more its free...

catch me on icq if ya need any more info: i am using to develop some stuff for microsft flight simulator.


all the animation capabilities are retained in gmax

thanks tom, i'll prob get with you in a day or two here with some more q's. i'm sort of evaluating what i want to really try to learn at the moment, leaning towards maya for its animation capabilities but i know max is the standard when it comes to gaming and chances are that's where my first job will come from...so we shall see
